Massey helps lead the national "war on cancer"
The passage of the National Cancer Act, popularly considered to have launched the nation's "war on cancer," marked its 40th anniversary in December 2011. There is much to celebrate. From 1990 to 2007, the death rate from all cancers combined declined by 22% for men and 14% for women, resulting in 900,000 fewer deaths. More than 12 million individuals living in the United States are cancer survivors. VCU Massey has contributed to this "war" in no small measure, as recent research demonstrates.

Patients receive only half of preventive health services at annual check-ups |
A study performed by researchers led by Jennifer Elston Lafata, Ph.D., co-leader of Massey's Cancer Prevention and Control program, found that 46 percent of eligible and due services were missed during periodic health examinations. The study examined the factors contributing to less-than-optimal service delivery, as well as technological advances that have the potential to increase the delivery of preventative health services and subsequently lower overall health care costs. Multiple myeloma discovery could bring about more effective treatments |
VCU Massey researchers have uncovered a new mechanism in multiple myeloma cells that plays a critical role in the cells' ability to resist cancer-fighting drugs. The findings could lead to more effective treatments for multiple myeloma, leukemia and other malignant blood disorders. Read more
Living example
Reed Whitener is a "living example of taking what we learn from our research and putting that knowledge to work, improving care for the next patient," said Massey oncologist Amir Toor, M.D., who led a multiple myeloma stem cell transplant clinical study that proved to successfully treat Reed's cancer. Dr. Toor's innovative therapies and Reed's will to survive defied the odds of a challenging multiple myeloma diagnosis. Read more

Young cancer survivors defy the odds and take on a new challenge
Courtney Skunda and Kaity Kasper were both diagnosed with cancer in their twenties. Though their experiences with the disease couldn't be more different, both are passionate about raising funds for cancer research at Massey. Together, Courtney and Kaity are leading the HDL, Inc. Massey Challenge and spreading the word that "Massey can't run without you!" Read more.
Join Courtney and Kaity at the 2012 HDL, Inc. Massey Challenge
The Massey Challenge is an official charity of the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k presented by MARTINS. Joining is a simple process.
- Register: After you sign up to participate in the 10k, register to help raise funds in the HDL, Inc. Massey Challenge. You can register as a team or an individual at no cost.
- Raise: As you prepare for the race, raise funds for Massey's cancer research by asking friends and family to sponsor you. Our online system makes sending emails and receiving online donations easy, or you can be creative and raise money in other fun and unique ways.
- Remember, the 10K race registration fees do not benefit VCU Massey Cancer Center, so we need your support of the HDL, Inc. Massey Challenge.
- Run or walk on March 31 with 40,000 of your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues.
