MASSEY TOPS THE LISTS

VCU Massey Cancer Center recently received top ranking in both local and national press.

On the national level, Massey was recognized by U.S. New & World Report as Richmond's only nationally ranked cancer care provider. For the first time, U.S. News ranked the hospitals in America's 52 largest metropolitan areas. Ranking at the top of all 20 hospitals in the Richmond metro area is VCU Medical Center, which includes Massey's oncology patient care. The rankings are based upon many factors, including patient safety and reputation with more than 9,000 specialists. Read more >>

On the local level, 24 of Massey's physicians were reported as "Top Docs" in Richmond Magazine's April 2011 issue. These selections were the result of a survey, which asked Richmond-area physicians who they would recommend in a range of specialties. Several of Massey's doctors appeared in more than one category. In addition, Massey's Barton Bobb was recognized as the top nurse practitioner.

Clinical trial inspires survivor to climb higher

In 2003, active 50-year-old computer sales professional Bob Holdsworth was diagnosed with stage III oral cancer that had metastasized to a lymph node. His doctor, Laurence DiNardo, director of Massey's Head and Neck Cancer Clinic and head of the VCU Department of Otolaryngology, recommended a clinical trial.

The trial offered a new and more aggressive treatment combination of radiation and chemotherapy and was one of the first nationwide for intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), which allows for high doses of radiation directly to the tumor while sparing the healthy surrounding tissue. The IMRT and chemotherapy regimen proved successful and eliminated his cancer.

Five years later, Holdsworth celebrated by fulfilling his life-long dream of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. He now lives the adventurer's life in Tanzania, managing a new, tented safari camp in the Grumeti Reserve north of Serengeti National Park. Read more >>

ENHANCEMENTS COMING FOR MASSEY'S DOWNTOWN CLINIC

Physical Improvements Underway for Dalton Clinic
The North Hospital lobby and Massey's Dalton Clinic will get new and improved surroundings after they undergo a facelift this spring. Enhancing the patient experience is the top priority of the team of hospital administrators, clinical staff, community volunteers and patient advocates who collaborated on the plans for the clinic's update.

The new design will bring soothing, inviting wall and fabric colors, upgraded furniture and flooring, along with many features to better serve patient needs, interests and well-being. Enhancements include:
  • A welcome desk at the entrance to North Hospital, staffed to greet and provide information to patients, caregivers and visitors.
  • Increased seating in the combined waiting areas of the lobby and the registration area.
  • More privacy within groupings of chairs in the waiting areas.
  • Improved directional signage.
  • Wall-mounted television screens to provide important information about educational programs, announcements, available services and more.
Plans are also being finalized for improvements to the exterior valet circle of North Hospital following the completion of the lobby and clinic's waiting areas. Expanding and improving the Dalton Clinic treatment areas remain a priority as well.

  • Providing general information and directions.
  • Helping to coordinate transportation.
  • Enlisting hospital personnel to clarify patient appointments and locations.
  • Referring patient and visitor issues to appropriate hospital staff.
  • Monitoring the lobby and patient waiting areas to assist patients who appear to have been waiting for an extended period of time.
Massey Ambassadors will be required to complete the VCU Health System health screening and orientation, and offer a minimum of four hours per week. To learn more, please contact Heather Martin in the Linen-Powell Patient Resource Library at (804) 828-8709.
