The Year of Mathematics
2009-2010 at Summit Montessori

In the sunlit, vaulted suite that is Summit's Upper Elementary loft, there is a powerful new dimension to the school's mathematics program.  This year, in addition to the rich, ongoing sequence of Montessori activities, the students of Upper El now spend three additional periods per week engaged in Mad Math - a high-powered, fully individualized program expressly created for them over the course of the summer.

This compelling new program offers several key advantages to the students of Summit:

Welcome to Summit's new Faculty and Staff
When the students returned to Summit in September, they were welcomed by several new members of the Summit Faculty and Staff.  We asked those new members to share with you their first impressions of Summit, their favorite part of the day, what they are looking forward to, and what they bring to the Summit Community.  Here are their answers.
The Annual Fund
The 2009/2010 Annual Fund

By now, many of you have received a letter from Rich asking you to donate to Summit's Annual Fund.  If you have already made a pledge, I would like to sincerely thank you.

Many of you were in attendance at our September 17th Parent's Night and heard from me about the relevance and importance of giving to the Annual Fund as best we can.  I feel the message bears repeating.

Summit's Annual Fund, like the Annual Fund of every independent school, is a vital portion of the school's current operating budget.  It pays for things like teacher salaries and educational expenses now.  These donations do not contribute to an endowment or a long-term capital campaign.

SMPA - Mom's Night Out and More!

Summit Mom's Night Out

Eli and Mom
Please join us on Thursday, November 12th at 7pm for a night of appetizers, drinks and conversation in the Marino Community Room at Summit. As an added bonus, we will be hosting several "home show" consultants and invite you to browse their products. Consultants from Party Lite Candles, Lia Sophia Jewelry, Tupperware, Creative Memories Scrapbooking, Tastefully Simple Foods and Jockey clothing will all be in attendance. Plus CABi clothing has given us a gift certificate to raffle off! Each consultant will donate between 10-20% of their sales to Summit. So, please mark your calendar and invite your friends. It will be a great chance to socialize and shop. Contact Sunny Herguth at sunnyherguth@msn.com or 617-429-3399 with questions or suggestions!

A Parent's Dilemma - Keep Them Home or Send Them In

It seems like it should be easy to decide whether to send your child to school or keep them home.  If the child is healthy, they go to school. If they have a fever or had a fever the day before, they stay home.  In practice, though, the gray area is much larger than the extremes. Do you send a child with a cough and runny nose but no fever? Do you send a child who is complaining of a stomach ache?  What questions should you use to guide your decisions?
