Texting and Driving Don't Mix
| by Theresa Marcum
Every year, the statistics become worse. Driving-related deaths and injuries as a result of texting and driving are increasing. A driver is 23 times more likely to get into a car accident if they are texting while they are driving. These chances increase when the driver is between the ages of 16 - 20. In an effort to develop an awareness of this issue, the KWHS Leadership group put together an anti-texting and driving presentation on May 12. Students heard dangerous statistics on texting and driving and then watched a documentary regarding three students who lost their lives as a result of texting while driving. The scene that seemed to have the most impact showed how these students lost their lives over texting as few as one to three words. The movie made it very clear that any texting while driving, no matter how quick it seems to be, can cost you your life. You can watch the movie here. Trooper Oswald-Debottis, from the Brighton State Police Post, spoke about the tragedies she has seen of teens texting and driving. She discussed her background and what it is like to notify a family that their loved one has died, as well as some of the procedures of an autopsy. She also reviewed the legal consequences of texting and driving.

The presentation ended after students were encouraged to sign a pledge that they would not text and drive. They were also given thumb bands with the words "txting kills". I have seen many presentations at KWHS. None of them stood out to me like this one did. I have never seen the students so quiet in an all school assembly before. They were attentive, and from the looks on their faces, I think many felt a deep sadness and realization of the devastating consequences of texting and driving. I encourage you to talk to your son or daughter about their thoughts on this presentation. Many young people believe that they are invincible when it comes to accidents. They believe that they will never be a victim or the person who causes injury or death to someone else. By opening up this line of discussion, you are helping raise their awareness of how the decisions they make do greatly impact their safety and the safety of others. |

Nick German Nicholas German has left his mark on Kensington Woods High School and the Flex-Trac Program. He has earned the distinction of being this year's Valedictorian and plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall to study Economics. Nick's future goals include earning a law degree and he also acknowledges that he has a strong interest in politics. Nick definitely possesses the knowledge, confidence and passion to run for public office one day! WXYZ's Channel 7 has also recognized Nick as one of Metro Detroit's "Brightest and Best" in which graduating seniors are honored for their academic achievements. Nick has been a strong representative of the Flex-Trac program completing many of his high school classes online. In addition to his online courses, Nick has also excelled at many day school classes and has opted for an impressive course of study his senior year which includes AP History, AP Government and Calculus. One of the highlights of Nick's high school experience was being a member of the Kensington Wood's Drama Club. Nick is a natural on the stage and held major roles in three productions at the school including "The Nerd", "Prelude to a Kiss" and "Barefoot in the Park". When asked about his experience at KWHS, Nick responds, "In my life there has been no greater joy than knowing the people at Kensington Woods, who were careful to never permit a dull day to go by. I have been given too much by the people of this school to forget any of you. Thank you." It has been an honor to have Nicholas as a student at our school and we wish him the best in his future studies at the U of M!
