The question "What is Law?" has troubled people for many years. An entire field of study known as jurisprudence, or the study of law and legal philosophy, is devoted to answering this question. Many definitions of law exist, but for our students, we define law as the rules and regulations made and enforced by government that regulate the conduct of people within a society. As children, our students learned about rules first at home and later at elementary school. At home parents made and enforced rules concerning issues like chores, bed times, homework schedules and the like. At Kensington Woods High School we establish rules about classroom behavior. Rules made and enforced by the government are called laws. The government makes laws that affect almost every aspect of daily life. Every society that has ever existed has recognized the need for laws. These laws may have been unwritten, but even early societies had rules to regulate peoples conduct. Without laws there would be confusion and disorder. This does not mean that all laws are fair or even good, but imagine how our young people might take advantage of one another without a set of rules. The rule of law requires that the rules by which we are governed be known in advance and created through democratic processes. Rules should not be made up after the fact by arbitrary actions or decrees. At Kensington Woods High School we have students debate many of the laws that they have to live by. Our concern is not that the students agree with the law but that they understand it and how it reflects and promotes a society's values. In the law classes we talk about protecting basic human rights, promote fairness, help resolve conflicts, promote desirable social and economic behavior, represent the will of the majority and protect the rights of the minority. The students always leave these classes having a new respect for themselves, the laws, and the society they live in.

Green Club Update & Volunteer Opportunities!
|
The Green Club is getting underway; most of our energy is currently focused on brainstorming ways to generate funding for upcoming projects (purchasing recycling bins and plants for our school grounds) and finding ways to greenify KWoods!.
School Beautification Day This Friday!
Green Club is also hosting KWoods' first School Beautification Day on Friday, May 13 from 12-3. Stop by and help us make KWoods look even better! Lunch will be provided for all volunteers! For more information, contact Mrs. Rohn, [email protected].
Bake Sale Fundraiser
One fundraiser held recently was a Green Club bake sale, held during lunch in the Big Room. Members generated almost $100; every little bit helps and our club members are to be commended on their initiative! Some student bakers made organic treats to sell; not only to raise money, but to raise awareness of alternative healthier foods that are better for our bodies and better for the earth. Some of our student bakers are pictured here.
Volunteer Opportunity at Recycle Livingston
Another fundraiser is coming up in June-this time, it's a VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY as well! Scheduled for Saturday, June 4, 2011, the Green Club is sponsoring a day to volunteer at:
Recycle Livingston
170 Catrell Street
Howell, MI 48832
http://www.recyclelivingston.org/volunteers_donations.html
Recycle Livingston is run almost entirely by volunteers; in order to increase participation, they also offer a program for non-profit organizations, school groups and youth organization. The purpose is to allow an organization who volunteers to collect and keep any returnable cans and bottles as a fund raiser, while providing volunteers to staff the recycle site. All returnables collected during normal site operations in the designated month will go to the organization. In addition to the bottles, a portion of the gate fees will be given to the volunteering organization.
We will need at least 10 volunteers on Saturday, June 4th, split into two shifts-morning and afternoon. The facility is open on Saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm. We need volunteers scheduled in two separate shifts from 8:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. A 15-minute overlap is used as a time to orient and hand off the shift to incoming volunteers.
This is a great opportunity for the Green Club to generate funds and give back to the community, but we need volunteers to help us out! Please consider donating some time for this worthy cause. You can donate time just to Green Club alone, or if you need this volunteer time to count for some other purpose, we can allow that, as well.
Please see Mrs. Rohn for details and to pick up/turn in a volunteer form. Click here to view the volunteer form and handbook:
