Adolescent Drug Use in Livingston County
|
by Theresa Marcum
Many of you may have heard of the devastating losses our county has endured with drug use, particularly heroin. This drug, which formerly was considered to be used among only the most extremely addicted individuals, is prevalent among young adults primarily because of its availability, cheapness and overall curiosity about what it is like. This drug knows no boundaries as it affects adolescents of all socioeconomic groups. In detnews.com this week, there is an article regarding the deadly statewide statistics of heroin use. http://www.detnews.com/article/20110427/METRO/104270369/Heroin-use-by-young-adults-devastates-outer-suburbs . Substance abuse counselors and court officials find that educating parents is a very important part of taking a proactive stance in making sure that your son or daughter does not become the next overdose statistic. At KWHS, the staff recognizes the dangers that drug use presents to adolescents. We want to be as educated as possible so that we are familiar with the signs and symptoms and are able to prevent serious, often deadly consequences from happening. In December, we participated in a training which provided education regarding the signs and symptoms of opiate (heroin) use. Unfortunately, many of these symptoms are hard to recognize as signs of drug use given that these symptoms are also commonly seen in adolescent behavior in general. These symptoms include tiredness, irritability, wanting to be away from family and much time spent in the bathroom. If you would like additional informational about these symptoms and more, please note that the 53rd District Court is sponsoring an informational seminar for parents regarding prescriptive drug use on May 11th. Please see the ad below for details. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at tmarcum@kwoods.org or 517-545-0828, ext. 232.

Next Monday, May 9th at 11:00 am, KWHS will distribute and explain the results of the Explore / Plan tests to Freshmen and Sophomores. We would like to invite any interested parents to be there for a quick explanation of how to read the score sheets and what the scores mean. For interested parents unable to attend the session, individual appointments can be set up with Mrs. Pollman and Mr. Muennix. During the week of May 9th, teachers will use advisory time for item-by-item analysis of the test. The Explore / Plan is an important step in preparing students for the 11th grade ACT, a nationwide accepted college entrance exam.

KWoods Invades Washington DC
|
By Bob Gluth Over the past week students from Kensington Woods High school, John Bodo, Willie Hazel, Zack Kunkle, Jordon Arnold, Jacob Honey, Matt Uhley, Trevor Osterdale, and Krystal Franck along with Chaperone Allison Frank and Teacher Bob Gluth spent a vigorous and fast paced week in Washington D. C. The students started out the week by visiting the offices of our State Representative Mike Rodgers and Senators Levin and Stabenow. While the Congress was on its spring break the clerks were happy to answer questions and allowed us into the offices for our own self tour. We continued on to our tour of the Capitol Building and spent some time in the balconies of the House of Representatives and the Senate. After lunch in the Senate Cafeteria, we checked out the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court building. On to the White House where we viewed both the North and the South Porticoes and as the day came to a close, we wandered down the National Mall into the evening and viewed the monuments as they began to light up for the evening. We began the next day by attending the Holocaust Memorial where the students had a real eye-opening experience to one of the most tragic events in modern history. The Holocaust Memorial is a four story building filled with the history of the Nazi Regime and the spectacle of ethnic cleaning. It is a sobering experience that will remain with the students for a long time. It was then on to the Washington Monument where we traveled to the top to get a beautiful view of the District and all of its memorials. After lunch, we took a tram ride out to the Washington Cathedral where the students had the opportunity to view one of the most beautiful gothic structures available in the United States. It is not difficult to image that it took over 80 years to complete this magnificent edifice. President Wilson is entombed at the National Cathedral, the only president to actually be buried in the District. After a tram ride back through Georgetown we headed on back through the National Mall and dinner at the historic Taco Bell. We managed to get a little bit of the southern rain on our third day in town but what was supposed to be thunder storms turned out to be minor sprinkles as we started out our day at the Jefferson and FDR Memorials. We then spent some time at the Lincoln, Korean War and Vietnam Memorials which led us on to the American History Museum (Which displays the Star Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired the National Anthem) and a stop at the National Archives to view the only hand written copy of the Constitution along with the Declaration of Independence. After dinner at the Union Train Station we went on back to the hotel for a little relaxing in the pool. Our final day was spent at Arlington National Cemetery where we watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and visited the Kennedy graves and Arlington House, along with many other interesting stops in the cemetery. I know its hard to image but the students slept most of the way home from DC. They had the opportunity to visit one of the most historic, and engaging cities in the world. Thanks to the parents who allowed us to spend some quality time with their students. I know they will remember this trip for a long time.
