Kensington Woods High School
Invisible Children and KWoods
by Jessie Pratt

During ACT/MME week, Freshmen, Juniors and Seniors spent the week working on a special service learning project designed around the Invisible Children program. Invisible Children is an organization dedicated to ending the use of children soldiers in Uganda and DR of Congo as well as helping restore peace and prosperity to northern Uganda. They do this through film, creativity and social action.

On Tuesday, students spent time doing some interactive learning about Africa and setting the context to explain the conflict in Uganda and surrounding areas.

On Wednesday, we screened and discussed the original Invisible Children film, Invisible Children: Rough Cut.

On Thursday, representatives from the Invisible Children program came in and screened their new film Tony, which is about the life of a boy who was a night commuter in Uganda and has since grown up and begun working with Invisible Children. The representatives included Achiro Fionah. She is 22 and grew up in the midst of the Ugandan conflict. There was then time for discussion with the Invisible Children representatives.

After lunch, the students went back to their grade level advisories and developed Action Plans to think about how the school was going to get involved and then presented them to the entire group. There was enough momentum from this past week that we started a club at KWoods to focus on this issue and had our first meeting this past Tuesday.

One of the main plans of the Invisible Children club is to participate in Invisible Children's 25 movement schoolwide. For 25, participants are asked to stay silent for 25 hours on April 25, raise $25 and also write 2 letters to their congresspeople to let them know that we support funding the LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act that IC helped get passed last year. 25 represents the 25 years of war that the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) has created. All the monies raised go to support IC's Protection Plan. The Protection Plan funds radio towers in the DR of Congo to notify communities where the LRA is and a rescue and rehabilitation program for children soldiers.

The week working with Invisible Children was a powerful week for all. It gave us as a school many opportunities to focus on our mission in educating students from a different perspective, including creating

relationships and developing character through action and real life experiences.

The American Mathematics Competition Results

On Wednesday, February 25th, thirty-one advanced math students at KWHS participated in the American Mathematics Contest (AMC 12).  The AMC 12 is a 25 question, 75 minute multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems which can be understood and solved with advanced Algebraic concepts.  This is a national contest which takes place in many schools across the country on a specified date.  It is a way to recognize and reward excellence in mathematics by exposing students to challenging problems which require creative thinking.  Our school results are listed below.  Special congratulations to the top three finishers in the school who represent the team score for KWHS!
