By Jessie Pratt
On Thursday, we rolled out what most students and even teachers call the best part of the school year: Project Term. Project Term happens during the final two weeks of the school year and is two weeks full of exciting, engaging, project-based experiential learning. Teachers teach classes that they are passionate about and students choose classes they find exciting.
Classes taught come from a variety of genres and are provide experiences that would be difficult to provide during the normal school year. Selections from this year's Course Guide include: Service KWoods, Perfectly "Horror"ble Class, Songwriting Initiatives, Food Revolution, Martial Arts, Reinventing the Renaissance and Outdoor Sports.
All classes include some type of community component, where the class leaves the school building and experiences part of their learning through an interaction with the community. All classes also incorporate hands-on learning that produces a project or experience designed by students and teachers together. This hands-on, community based learning allows students to become more connected with their community, school, classmates and teachers; allowing for a more engaging and personal learning experience that carries on beyond the two weeks of Project Term. It perfectly demonstrates the Kensington Woods Difference.
Students received a Project Term Course Guide as part of a school assembly on Thursday. Please spend some time reviewing and selecting the courses with your students this week; course registration forms are due Friday, February 25 in the Main Office. You can also find the course guide online here.
And make sure to mark your calendars for Friday, June 10 from 6-8pm. This is when we host our annual Project Term Open House night where students share their work and experiences from Project Term. We encourage all families to join us in the celebration!
Because of the experiential nature of Project Term, most courses have some out of school component and many classes are conducted out of school altogether. Please consider assisting us during Project Term by helping transport students or offering your expertise in a course you see listed in the course guide. We are always looking for community contacts that might help enrich these courses as well. We would love to hear from you if you can help out in any way.

The American Mathematics Competition (AMC)
On Wednesday, February 23rd, approximately forty advanced math students at KWHS will participate in the American Mathematics Contest 12. The AMC 12 is a 25 question, 75 minute multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems which can be understood and solved with advanced Algebraic concepts. This is a national contest which takes place in many schools across the country on a specified date. It is a way to recognize and reward excellence in mathematics by exposing students to challenging problems which require creative thinking. The students will work individually on the problems, and the top three finishers in the school will represent the team score for KWHS. Contest results will be posted in March!

Katelynn Kozbial's Statistics Poster from 2010
The 2011 Michigan Statistics Poster Competition Students in Mrs. Pollman's Advanced Algebra 2 & Trigonometry class have been working on statistics posters for the 2011 Michigan Statistics Poster Competition. The competition is sponsored by the Department of Statistics and the Regional Math and Science Center at Grand Valley State University with support from the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A statistics poster uses numbers and graphs to tell the story of a data set. Whether the summary is a bar chart, histogram, or table of numerical summaries, the focus should always be on the meaning behind the data. In a well done statistics poster, the reader is able to discover the story behind the data by following the logical progression of the poster.
The posters are due in class on Friday, February 25th and will be sent to Grand Valley State University the first week in March. Our students will compete in the 10-12 category. Prizes in the amounts of $72, $48, and $36 will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each of the grade level categories. Last year, KWHS students impressed the judges by submitting both the 1st Place and 3rd Place posters for the Grade 10-12 category. You can find photos of the winning posters at the following website: http://www.gvsu.edu/stat/mspc-home-30.htm.
