Kensington Woods High School
Interested in FIRST Robotics? Let us know!

We are looking for students and parents who would like to become involved in the FIRST Robotics Program at KWoods. Parents who volunteer to help do not need to have professional experience in engineering, just an interest and desire to help! If you are a student or parent who would like to get involved, please contact Mr. Perry at 517.545.0828 or jperry@kwoods.org as soon as possible.

The FIRST Robotics season is November through April. Being on the team will be an extensive time commitment for students, minimally 10 hours a week attending 3 work sessions each week.  For the adult coaches, the time commitment will depend on the number of parents who volunteer.

The ideal FIRST Robotics team has 17-25 students and at least five adult volunteers, ideally some with a background in engineering, metal work and fabricating and all of the knowledge of safety in working with complex machinery that goes with those skills.  Because KWHS has a smaller student population than other schools we will be competing against, we have invited Charyl Stockwell Preparatory Academy to join forces with Kensington Woods High School to put together a FIRST Robotics Team this year.

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) describes its program in the following way:

"The varsity sport for the mind," FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.  It's as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.

As part of FRC, students:

·      Learn from professional engineers

·      Build and compete with a robot of their own design

·      Learn and use sophisticated software and hardware

·      Compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments

·      Earn a place in the World Championship

·      Qualify for over $12 million in college scholarships

More information about FIRST Robotics can be found at the website.  If you are interested in helping build this team, or would like to know more about FIRST Robotics at KWHS, please contact Mr. Perry.

A Ski/Snowboarding Club is in the Works...But We Need to Know if You are Interested!

We would like to start a Ski and Snowboarding Club for Kensington Woods at Mt. Brighton. We would start after break and meet weekly on Mondays or Tuesdays from around 5pm-10pm. Cost of an all area ticket will depend on the number of people interested in the club, it can range from for $20.50 per visit to $31. Ski rentals will range from $17 per rental to $25, and snowboard rentals range from $21 to $25. The more people who join, the cheaper the rates are!

To get this club going, we need to know if you want to join! KWoods students and family members are more than welcome to join! If you are interested, please sign up on the interest sheet outside the Main Office or contact Mrs. Pratt at jpratt@kwoods.org before Holiday Break. Please also indicate if you have a preference in days (Monday or Tuesday).

Also, if you are a parent that would be willing to help out, please contact Mrs. Pratt.

Leadership Conference
by Theresa Marcum

Earlier this year, I took a small group of our Leadership students to the Giant Step Teen Leadership conference at Wayne State University.  The objective of this conference was to promote social harmony and inclusion through shared issues and experiences.  Adult facilitators led small group discussions which promoted the students to share, learn and understand different points of view.  As a result, students were able to uncover the many things that teens have in common.  The KWHS students that attended the conference thought the experience was very valuable and are planning on replicating a version of this conference for all KWHS students.

In a world where hatred and isolation can be so accepted, this conference was a beam of optimism.  As an adult, it showed me proof of how teens not only can make a positive difference in the world, but WANT to make a positive difference in the world.  Research from the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute has shown that when students have attended this one day conference of intensive, integrated discussion, their attitudes were improved and they were motivated to celebrate their differences not just tolerate or shun them.

I am proud that we have such a great group of students in our Leadership club.  I look forward to watching them promote their skills of positive communication, open mindedness and giving back to the community.
