From the Principal Persistence
|
|
Whenever I'm invited to write an ENews column, I usually like to write about intentional practices in our school, educational values that we hold high, or topics related to the mission of our school. This column is no exception.
There is a word that has been tossed around a lot this year in our faculty meetings, in advisory class with students and in casual hallway conversations. The word is persistence. Persistence, we believe, is perhaps the most important quality an adolescent must develop and become skilled at in order to be successful in high school and beyond. While I'm sure we would all agree about the merits of being skilled at persistence, we would also probably agree that the fast paced technologically steeped lives our students are part of today can be in direct opposition to the quality of persistence. Teenagers have very powerful technology at their fingertips 24/7 which leads them to become accustomed to instant feedback when they have a question, want to find a piece of information or are curious about what their friends are up to.
We understand as educators that it is our job to continually instill the value of slowing down, taking your time and persisting through a challenging problem or concept where an immediate solution just isn't present.
I believe students need a variety of opportunities in their life to learn the habit of persistence; it shouldn't just happen in school. In fact I'm sure there are many occasions outside of the classroom when you as parents can take a moment to point out how persistence led to a job well done or to motivation to improve upon something.
I had the privilege of witnessing just such an event last week at a KWoods Cross Country meet.
If you ask a runner why they enter races they know they will not win you're likely to get an answer that has something to do with wanting to run faster than their last race. There are two letters that can motivate a runner to achieve goals beyond what they thought was possible. P R, or personal record. There is really nothing quite like the feeling of hitting a P.R. because in order to achieve a P.R. you must leave everything out on the course. Anyone who has experienced this, through running or some other activity, knows there is just is no feeling in the world that can match putting forth your absolute best effort and then having a measure to prove that you gave it your all.
So when I was spectating at a KWoods Cross Country meet recently on the very challenging Kensington Park course, I didn't know from hearing their times as they crossed the finish line that a couple of our students had set a PR for that course. It wasn't until I saw the look on their face when they heard their times that I knew it must have been a PR because there is no mistaking that look. After what feels like an all-out sprint for three miles over hills, tight corners, narrow passing lanes and uneven ground, the look is a cross between excruciating pain and exhilaration. A joyful agony. Recognizing the look, I simply said to one of these students, "There isn't a better feeling is there?" He replied, gasping for breath, "No, no there really isn't." He was stoked. And then the educator in me kicked in and I wondered how this student's persistence in running would translate into the classroom when he must solve a complicated problem where the path to the solution is not immediately present?

Support KWHS
|
Kensington Woods High School is participating in the FundingFactory® Recycling Program! This fundraiser is FREE and simple because there's nothing to sell, no paperwork to fill out and no deadline. The program runs year-round, accumulating constant income for our efforts. But we won't get very far without your support. Please donate your empty printer cartridges and used cell phones to our Schooland we'll take it from there! We will recycle the cartridges and cell phones through FundingFactory to raise funds for our travel abroad program. Last year alone, more than 300 million cartridges were thrown away, while 30,000,000 cell phones were tossed or replaced. We're alleviating the volume of waste that goes into landfills, while raising money for our program! Your help is vital to our fundraising success. Cell phones and cartridges can be dropped off in the big room in the collection box next to the office. Thank you for your help!

Interested in Study Abroad?
|
Dear Parents, Every year, I am proud to offer our KWHS students the opportunity to go abroad for two weeks and learn about other cultures from within. The destination always depends on interest and probability; the choices for this school year are again (Cologne) Germany and (Playa del Carmen) Mexico. In either case, students would be staying with host families and attend school for several hours a day. Upon completion of assigned course work, students receive .5 credits counting toward their foreign language requirement. The total costs before fund raisers associated with either of these trips have been around $2,000, with a $1,000 deposit due the second week in February. The balance (minus funds raised, usually between $150 and $350 per student) would be due in the first May week. If you are interested in having your student go abroad, please e-mail me at mmuennix@kwoods.org so I may start the planning process. Students must have successfully completed at least one year of the target language of the country we intend to visit. If you have questions about either of these trips, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thank you! Mr. Muennix

Drama Club Supports the Community
| This year, the Kensington Woods Drama Club is participating in the Trick-or-Treat So Kids Can Eat (TOTS-EAT) program. We will be collecting non-perishables and canned goods throughout the month of October to donate to Gleaners Food Bank. Our goal is to collect 1000 pounds of food.
Please take the time to stop in and help fill up our donation boxes which will be in the Big Room starting Friday, October 15. Your generous donations will go to help the more than 12 million hungry children in the United States, many of whom live right here in Livingston County.
Kensington Woods Drama Club will also be hosting a Bake Sale during the last week of October. All proceeds from the Bake Sale will go towards the TOTS-EAT program.
If you would like more information about Drama Club or TOTS-EAT, contact the Drama Club Director, Jason Pratt at jason.pratt@kwoods.org.
