January 25th The Third Sunday after Epiphany
Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the
call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good
News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the
glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
8am: Holy Eucharist
Our early service is unaccompanied by music and usually lasts about 50 minutes. Coffee and fellowship are offered before the service begins in the parish hall, while the sanctuary is available for quiet prayer. Another coffee hour follows the service.
9am: 2008 Annual Meeting Breakfast goodies will be available in the Parish Hall following the 8am Eucharist. Please join us for this important meeting. We will elect new Vestry members and our representatives to the diocesan convention. There will be a presentation on the 2009 operating budget, and the Rector's State of the Parish address. Good times!
10am: Holy Eucharist
This Eucharistic service is accompanied by Soul Purpose, our contemporary music band. A coffee hour for kids and adults follows the service.
11:30am: Music rehearsals Following the worship services, our musical groups gather to prepare for the next weeks' offerings. |

'Souper-bowl' Sunday February 1st. This is an easy way to help out the Puyallup Food Bank. If everyone who came to church this Sunday brought a can or package of soup with them, we would have 120+ containers of soup. Let's fill the barrel!
Saturday the 7th of February, at 5:00pm in the evening, Christ
Episcopal Church of Puyallup will hold it's First Annual Chili
Cook-Off! Everyone is invited. Please bring
either A) a pot of chili to enter into the competition or B) $5.00 per
person, kids 12 and under free. The money will go into the outreach
fund and on to the FISH Food Bank. If you are bringing chili,
please arrive early and have it set up before the 5pm starting time.
Tables will be provided, along with electrical outlets for crock pots.
Each chili entry will be given the same space; please bring serving
utensils, condiments, and anything else you'd like to go with your
chili. Sampling cups and spoons will be provided, along with
drinks. Each person (whether they brought chili or not) will be given a
single ballot with which to vote. Each chili will be numbered to
preserve some semblance of impartiality. Tasters are asked to sample
each chili in order to vote more fairly. Voting will be in these
categories:
- Best Presentation. For the chili displayed most proudly, interestingly, or stunningly.
- Most Original. For the chili that combined unique or unexpected ingredients with good taste.
- Best Overall. For the "Best in Show" chili.
- Father's Choice. You don't get to vote for this one unless your name is The Rev. Benjamin J. Newland.
- Junior
Chili Award. If there are entries by chili chefs 18 years old or
younger, the chili receiving the most votes in any category will be
declared Jr. Chili Champion.
Prizes will be awarded! Get out those chili recipes, or make up a new one. It's time to put some heat back into February!
A class for Eucharistic Visitors will be held between the morning services on Sunday, February 8th, in the Conference Room. If you are interested in join this special ministry of hands-on pastoral care, please contact Fr. Ben soon. Current Eucharistic Visitors are also invited to attend the class.
A Lenten quiet day will be held at St. Joseph-St. John Episcopal Church, 11111 Military Rd. SW, Lakewood, Saturday, February 28, 10 am to 3pm. Includes meditation time and labyrinth walk. There will be an introduction to the labyrinth, designed by Dan 'the Labyrinth Man' Niven, and meditations led by Nancy Steinberg. Nancy has been using the labyrinth for her "spiritual conversations" for
nine years, walking the labyrinth weekly for four years. She helped create both the cloth labyrinth and the outdoor labyrinth at St. Paul's, Port Townsend. In 2007 Nancy moved the cloth labyrinth to the Mission Creek Correctional Center for Women in Belfair, and has helped lead labyrinth walks for the women there. Nancy attends St. Paul's, Bremerton, St. Paul's, Port Townsend and Grace Lutheran, Port Townsend. Bring a bag lunch and a Lenten snack to share (fruit, nuts, cheese, etc.) Soup and beverages provided. Donation suggested. Register/info at stjjs1@juno.com or call (253)584-6143.
General Announcements
Elsa and Ben have been working to make the Church Website up to date and accurate, so stop by and reread your favorite Friday Letter or eClarion, catch up on sermons you may have missed (including last week's Sr. Sermon by Luke Owen), and scout ahead on the Calendar page.
Pledge Envelopes are finally here! Pick yours up at the church. If you didn't make a pledge, there won't be any envelopes waiting for you. Pledge cards will also be available, in case you really want some of those great envelopes!
January is 'toiletries month' for the Food Bank. Shampoo, toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant, soap, or sanitary pads would be most welcome. Thank you for your generosity!
