Greetings!
What a year we've had so far! An exciting partnership with CharityCall, a team of climbers forming to climb Kilimanjaro to raise awareness for pediatric AIDS and our upcoming visit to our programs in Africa has made for a great start to the year. We look forward to what 2009 has for us and for the kids in our programs. Thanks to all of you for the part you play in our work!
On behalf of the kids,
Tanya Weaver

From St. Mary's Mission Hospital in Kenya
St. Mary's Mission Hopstial is a non-profit facility in Nairobi, Kenya. We serve an average of 1,000 outpatients and 350 hospitalized patients daily within our mission, which is aimed at serving lower-income Kenyans with affordable, competent health care.
We have known and worked with AFCA for over four years. They help us by providing the ARVs and other medicines required by our pediatric patients with HIV infection. Through their help, we are able to provide these life-giving medicines free of charge for several hundred children. In this partnership AFCA has been very dependable, transparent, and extremely interested in providing any assistance we request.
As a mission doctor in East Africa for the past 30 years, I am impressed by AFCA's approach to providing assistance. Their assistance is so structured as to maximize their fund resources actually getting to patients, while keeping administrative costs to a bare minimum. Indeed, they stand out amongst all the AIDS NGO's operating in East Africa for their efficient utilization of donor funding, with the vast majority of their received funds actually going toward providing our poor with medicines. AFCA is recognized as a serious, no wastage/frills organization that uses donor funding to the maximum benefit. I trust this organization, and we have been utilizing AFCA for channeling our hospital's own US designated donor contributions over to us here in Kenya. They have done this without any charges, even though it entails considerable extra work on their part, and have done so in a transparent, dependable manner utilizing their existing staff.
Another attribute which is unique to AFCA is their ability to genuinely partner with us at the "ground level" in Kenya, to design HIV care delivery in a locally-appropriate, cost-effective manner. In other words, they listen to their partners in the mission field. So many other organizations come with their pre-packaged agenda and detailed plans, which might seem reasonable in the US, but are less than appropriate or cost-inefficient within our Kenyan context.
It is with great happiness that we work with AFCA and hope to continue to do so for many more years.
Sincerely, Rev. Dr. Bill Fryda, M.D. Medical Director, St. Mary's Mission Hospital Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine (Mayo Clinic) Diplomate, American Board of Hematology Recipient of the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumnus Award, 2005 |
