Greetings!
As Thanksgiving approaches, we'd like to take a moment to thank each of you who has been a part of our work in Africa. Thank you for caring for the kids, for volunteering long hours, for your encouragement, for your donations, for your prayers, and for the hope you give us. This work is truly not our own, but it is due to many who have given of their talents and resources to help little ones who for so long had no hope. Now, they are hopeful, looking forward to a brighter future.
I'd like to share a note i received today from Dr. Bill Fryda, the director of one of our partner hospitals: St. Mary's Mission Hospital in Elementita, Kenya.
"We sure do appreciate the wonderful work you folks are doing for our mission hospitals. This week, we've been sorting and distributing some of the supplies you sent per the two containers. Much appreciated! As I have mentioned before, one of the staff workers here is sort of like a son to me, and his kid has completely adopted me as his babu (grandpa). Even today, I was working with Dave and when his little boy Kim came along, I was thinking of you folks. Dave is alive & healthy, as is his 9-year old daughter, thanks to AFCA. Kim is HIV negative, again thanks to you folks. His mother died shortly after Kim's birth with resistant HIV, before you folks were our saviors at St. Mary's. There's not a day gone by that we don't remember you with grateful praise. May God bless you!"
Our thanks go out to you, our donors and supporters, for allowing us to help people like Dave, Kim and his little sister.
Please read on and learn what is happening here at AFCA and with our programs. And, as always, we welcome your input and your hand in helping these kids grow up into all they were intended to be.

World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day (WAD), established by the World Health Organization in 1988, is observed every year on December 1st. WAD provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.
The Red Ribbon is the global symbol for solidarity with HIV-positive people and those living with AIDS.
Since the beginning of the HIV epidemic, 25 million people have died of HIV related causes. In Sub-Saharan Africa alone, the epidemic has orphaned nearly 12 Million children under the age of 18.
Recent statistics suggest 33 million people are currently living with HIV worldwide. Many of these people are also dealing with other challenges such as extreme poverty, stigma and lack of healthcare.

Samford University Students Fight AIDS
Something great could happen on the campus of Samford University--soon. Posters are up, and news of World Aids Day events are spreading all across Birmingham.
SU's International Justice Campaign, the ONE Campaign and social justice chapters on campus have teamed up with AFCA, World Vision, Nashville Cares and Alabama AIDS to spread awareness in and around their community. Students at Samford have begun to organize events for December 1st (World AIDS Day) to honor AIDS victims all across the world. A further goal is to rouse a desire amongst its student body to respond to this terrible disease.
On the day of Dec. 1, these organizations will park themselves in the middle of campus, change the color of their renowned fountain to red, tie ribbons around trees, and send out hundred of representatives in red to draw students to their tables. Once students come to the tables, they will hear about a real disease--and real opportunities to respond. Money will be raised to support Alabama AIDS, a organization headquartered in Birmingham which helps approximately 15,000 victims of AIDS in Alabama. Funds will also be collected to support AFCA's work in Sub-Saharan Africa.
On the night of Dec. 1, a Broken Bread meal will be hosted in the University Center. This meal will be a simple one; porridge and prayer. The representative from Alabama AIDS will speak about the vision of the local organization, AFCA videos will presented and a call for response will be encouraged. The heart of the event is not social acceptance, but a response to the need, a response to the grace bestowed upon us, and the belief that restoration will come. |
| Tribute Cards Available
Instead of giving wine, chocolates, candy, or stationary again this year, why not present someone with a Tribute Card? If you'd like to make a donation on someone's behalf, we'll be happy to sign your name on the card and mail it to your friend, colleague, client, or employee, letting them know that a donation was made in their honor.
Happy Holidays as you give hope and life! |
