Greetings!

What a great year it has been!  And the past months have flown by...I am always amazed at how quickly time passes.  Yet, in the past short months of 2008, we have been very busy at AFCA...distribution of medicine (over $7,000,000 worth of medicine, food and aid was sent to Zimbabwe, Kenya and Uganda this year already!), event planning,  fundraising, and communicating with the children are all part of our daily work and we love it.  We hope you'll enjoy reading about what has been happening here lately and that you'll be part of this work - either through volunteering or as a donor.  We welcome you.

A House for Mary

When Mary was 12 years old, she lost both her parents.  Her father died of an AIDS-related illness and her mother  died when she was hit by a car.  With three siblings to raise, she lost her childhood overnight, having to care for the little ones and for an elderly grandmother who is  not able to take care of the children.  To add to the tragedy, Mary was raped twice by a 70-year old man.

With innocence gone and facing the world on their own, these kids were found by the International Justice Mission.  This group heard that Milele (a Kenyan musical group) could help them build a home and they helped the children apply for help.  Milele turned to AFCA for some help and together, we will build a house for Mary, her grandmother, siblings and a foster couple who  will help raise the kids.  The foster parents are being screened by Oasis Africa, so a great partnership between Oasis, Milele and AFCA has been formed...all to help Mary and her siblings.

Author Commends AFCA in New Book

whatmatters cover
AFCA has been included in best-selling author David Elliot Cohen's new book, What Matters, as a noteworthy organization in the struggle against AIDS. Using alluring photographs and stimulating essays, the book has brought a spotlight on the continuous battle against AIDS in Africa. The book can be pre-ordered through Barnes & Noble.

"The purpose of the What Matters project is to provoke discussion of essential global issues in various media, to inspire social action, and to provide readers with resources they can utilize to help create social change," said Rose Whitmore, editorial assistant of What Matters.

The book and website contain a "What You Can Do" section in order to inspire the readers to become involved. Within the topic of the AIDS epidemic, AFCA has been acknowledged as a leading organization to stop the spread of AIDS and HIV in Africa.

The public can view the complete contents of the book online

The idea, of course, is to get these very visceral photographs and poignant essays in front of as many people as possible and then translate the resulting interest into donations and actions to help the needy of the world.
Travel and Save!

Over the years you've supported AFCA with your voice, your energy and your dollars. Now, we're proud to say, it's time to give you something back!

AFCA has a new membership service that actually puts the "fun" in fundraising...and it won't cost you a penny. I know you've heard that one before. But, this time it's true!  AFCA now has its own travel website at Travelafca.com!

This new service is like having our own  ExpediaŽ just for AFCA supporters and friends! Everything you need is right here. You get access to the same airlines, hotels and rental car companies, cruises and vacation packages you find on all the other major travel websites, and, best of all...you get some of the lowest travel prices on the internet!
Getting great travel prices for you is fantastic, right? But, how is this going to help raise funds for AFCA?

Here's How it Works - if you don't know, every time you use a travel website like ExpediaŽ, the travel companies pay BIG commissions for your reservation.  Well, now when you book travel on our  website, AFCA will get a whopping 60% of those commissions! Any way you look at it, this is a win-win situation.
You get great travel rates and you help funnel dollars from the travel companies to AFCA to advance our cause.

You're probably in the middle of planning your summer vacation or maybe looking ahead to plan travel for a fall getaway. Why not take the travel website for a "test drive" right now? I'm sure you'll like what you find and it would be a great way for us to kick off this new service.

Try out our new website at: Travelafca.com. Use our new travel website and while you are flying to some exotic locale, you'll know you are supporting our work. It's that simple!

Oh, and one more thing, please bookmark our new website. That way you'll be able to use it anytime you need travel.

Thanks for your commitment to AFCA and for trying out our new travel service.  Bon Voyage!
