| A Word From our Kids
Colin Crowley of Newbeat Productions lived in Mombasa, Kenya for four months to document the lives of children AFCA supports. While there, he found that the kids had something to say to those who are part of our work and their lives. They are so grateful for your generosity!
Click here to hear what they have to say. Remember that these are kids who are infected with HIV/AIDS and who were on death's door not long ago...

AIDS FACTS
Around the world, there were 2.1 million deaths from AIDS related complications in 2007
More than 38 million people around the world are infected by HIV/AIDS, 25 million in Africa alone.
In 2004-5, Zimbabwe received little or no HIV/AIDSfunding support from the main donor initiatives. Neighboring country Zambia, which has a similar HIV prevalence rate, receives around $187 per HIV+ person annually from foreign donors. In Zimbabwe, the figure is estimated to be $4.
The situation in Zimbabwe is now so bad that:
- Between 2002 and 2006, the population is estimated to have decreased by four million people.
- Infant mortality has doubled since 1990. Now there is one death for every 8 births.
- Average life expectancy for women, who are particularly affected by Zimbabwe's AIDS epidemic, is 34 - the lowest anywhere in the world. Officials from the World Health Organization have admitted that since this figure is based on data collected two years ago, the real number may be as low as 30.
- As of 2006, Zimbabwe had a higher number of orphans, in proportion to its population, than any other country in the world, according to UNICEF. Onein five children are now orphas in Zimbabwe, 1.3 million of them from HIV/AIDS.
- One hundred babies become HIV+ every day in Zimbabwe.
- A child dies every 15 minutes due HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe.

Climb Up!
Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up Summer Summit Challenge
Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up is kicking off this year's event with a Summer Summit Challenge! Climbers and hikers all over the country are invited to participate in summiting the highest peak in each of the 50 states of the United States in an effort to raise awareness and funds for pediatric AIDS. June 27 - July 6, 2008 is the time frame to accomplish this feat, giving people climbing Denali time to reach the top.
Please register at www.ClimbUpSoKidsCanGrowUp.com and be sure to write the state and mountain where you will summit in the "where you will participate" box so we can include you in the SUMMER SUMMIT CHALLENGE web page and be sure to tell us on which date you are climbing. Individuals raise a minimum of $115 and teams raise $5000 (we provide many tips for fundraising on our website) and the highest fundraisers win cool gifts from the outdoor industry.
If you cannot participate in the Summer Summit, please consider climbing with us on Sept. 20 and/or 21 as part of Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up 2008.
Proceeds benefit children served by the American Foundation for Children with AIDS (www.helpchildrenwithaids.org). AFCA provides life saving medication for children affected by HIV/AIDS.
