Southeast Regional Unity Conference: April 1-3, 2011
The Southeast Regional Unity Conference is an annual gathering of progressive lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer identified people and their allies in the Southeast. It was founded to create dialogues about the intersections of gender and sexuality with ability, age, class, faith, health, and race/ethnicity, to explore strategies for effective grassroots organizing, and to share work that we and other LGBTIQ activists are doing in the Southeast. In generating these conversations, the Unity Conference serves to foster a progressive Southeastern LGBTIQ movement that reflects and affirms all aspects of the identities of LGBTIQ people. The conference is run entirely by students, though it is intended for a broader audience of LGBTIQ and allied community members.

In Turnabout, U.S. Says Marriage Act Blocks Gay Rights
By CHARLIE SAVAGE and SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
Advocates of same-sex marriage hailed the president's decision; critics called it a politicization of the Justice Department. When suits challenge the 1996 law barring recognition of same-sex marriages, federal lawyers will now tell judges it should be struck down. DOMA is Unconstitutional - Huffington Post
The Supreme Court has held that most laws that treat some people differently from others are constitutional if the difference in treatment rationally furthers a legitimate government interest. A central question in the legal debate over the constitutionality of laws that discriminate against gays and lesbians (such as the federal Defense of Marriage Act) is whether the government's interest in treating gays and lesbians differently from other Americans is sufficiently weighty to justify the discrimination.
