August is National Child Support Month
by Mallory Hyatt, Jeffco Human Services |
Throughout August, Child Support Services, a program of Jefferson County Department of Human Services, is raising awareness about the importance of child support, how it works, and the available resources. This month is also a time to salute parents who work hard to ensure their children have the brightest future possible.
The mission of the Colorado Child Support Program is to ensure all children receive consistent financial and medical support from each parent. This is accomplished by locating each parent, establishing paternity, establishing a medical and financial support court order, and ensuring those obligations are being met monthly.
With a staff of 52, Jefferson County Child Support Services collected more than $31 million in 2011 and served more than 12,000 families, 24,000 parents, and an estimated 30,000 children.
"In Jeffco, Child Support Services encourages and promotes parents' involvement in their children's lives both financially and emotionally and is becoming a key strategy for families wanting to become self-sufficient, which impacts and decreases the effects of poverty," states Lynn Johnson, Human Services Executive Director.
Child Support Services offers Saturday Parent Group Meetings as an ongoing activity for parents with lessons on parenting, guest speakers, coaching, and mentoring, which includes interactive "play" group with parents and their kids. This is a peer-based support group for nonresidential parents. Through this group, parents are given access to Human Services and community based resources. This is also a great place to network for employment and other opportunities. No appointment needed, contact Angie Smith at 303-271-4284 for more information.
In addition, Child Support Services offers a Fatherhood Program. Dads (and moms) get assistance in identifying and overcoming barriers they face in maintaining a role in their children's lives, becoming and maintaining current on financial obligations for their children and finding additional supports in the community.
Child Support Services is located in the Laramie Building, 3500 Illinois Street, Golden CO. Suite 1300. Hours of operation are Monday - Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.jeffco.us/cse or call 303-271-4300. |

Open Space Opens Shop
by Thea Rock, Open Space Communications Manager
On July 12, Jefferson County Open Space celebrated the opening of its new shop, a facility that will protect equipment and supplies from the weather and improve the division's ability to meet the needs of the community.
The shop, located adjacent to the Fossil Trace Golf Club Maintenance Shop on Illinois Street, was completed in 297 days at a cost of $1.29 million by CG Construction of Englewood and designed by the Golden architectural firm Rudd & Associates. Scott Timmons of Facilities Construction Management oversaw the project. Cooperation with the city of Golden and Fossil Trace Superintendent Noy Sparks was essential.
"In 2004, the county transferred to the city of Golden land for the golf course maintenance facility next door and the county retained one tract to be used by Open Space," Commissioner Donald Rosier said. "The land we retained, 3.9 acres, is now this wonderful facility."
"As the case with other county buildings, this facility is equipped with card reader access features for security, and we're especially proud of the energy efficiency features that include motion detectors and timers on lights and heaters to minimize their use when the building is unoccupied," Rosier said. "Solar panels can be added to the roof in the future to decrease energy expenses."
Stanton La Breche, park operations manager, outlined many advantages of the new shop.
"Vehicle bays will provide much-needed, year-round work spaces out of the weather," he said. "This shop will allow Open Space to consolidate our materials, supplies and machinery that we have in outlying areas so that crews won't need to drive off the campus. The overhead cranes will allow for unloading of trucks and material movement up and down to the mezzanine storage."
In addition to the 9,400 square feet provided by the main building, two covered equipment storage canopies that will protect Open Space equipment from the elements provide an additional 3,600 square feet.
"The utility buildings outside will enable us to get equipment out of the weather to increase its longevity," La Breche said. "Access to these docks is more convenient for semi-tractor trailers to navigate than the difficult maneuvering required at our other site. Aggregate storage will be relocated to this site into the bins outside. We've also relocated our chemical storage shed from the Open Space building down to this site."
Commissioner Donald Rosier, County Administrator Ralph Schell and Open Space Advisory Committee (OSAC) Chair Wayne Forman opened the bays of the shop, marking it as officially open. In the crowd were Director of Parks & Open Space Tom Hoby, other OSAC members and Open Space staff.
A video of the progression of the shop, from excavation to completion, is on the Open Space Facebook page at http://on.fb.me/OEnql3. |

Adventurous August Public Health Monthly Updates
by Nancy Braden, Jeffco Public Health

August is National Immunization Awareness month. To get your child/children up-to-date on immunizations, make an appointment with your healthcare provider or Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH). Smoke Free Environments Are Catching On
According to the U.S. Surgeon General, there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Smoke-free environments protect everyone.
For more information or to get involved in tobacco prevention efforts in supporting smoke free environments, visit Smokefreejeffco.com or contact Donna Viverette at 303-275-7555.
Protect against Pertussis or "whooping" cough
Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, a contagious bacterial infection spread by coughing/sneezing, continues to circulate around the country. It is most notable for the persistent, often severe, and long-lasting cough in those infected and can be life threatening in infants and young children.
JCPH urges everyone to be sure they are up-to-date on vaccinations. The childhood vaccine, DTaP protects against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. However, a booster vaccine, called Tdap is required when a child enters 6th grade. Children 7-10 years of age who are not up-to-date should also receive the Tdap vaccine. Due to an ongoing increase in reported pertussis cases throughout Colorado, Tdap is also recommended for all adults. This is especially important for adults who live with an infant and for childcare providers. To make an appointment, call 303-232-6301.
Got Milk? Be Sure It's Pasteurized
Raw milk - milk that comes straight from the cow, goat or sheep without being pasteurized can carry harmful bacteria and other germs that can cause severe illness, even death. The same goes for milk products such as certain cheeses, ice cream and yogurt produced from raw milk.
Pasteurization is the process of heating milk to a high enough temperature for a long enough time to kill disease-causing bacteria contained in the milk. Pasteurization became widespread in the United States by 1950. While the retail sale of raw milk is banned in many states, including Colorado, it is still made available in this state and others through the purchase of a cow or goat share operation. In this case, the consumer purchases a share of the actual animal and receives a quantity of the milk produced. Milk and milk products in Colorado are monitored by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's (CDPHE) Division of Environmental Health and Sustainability. Inspections are regularly performed and products are regularly sampled at all dairy farms, dairy plants and milk plants around Colorado.
The Centers for Disease Control has a raw milk website that contains useful information and materials, including a list of relevant publications and other scientific resources on illnesses associated with raw milk consumption. |
