What's at the South Service Center
by Bailey Becker, Jeffco Public Information

Last November, two Jefferson County offices moved into one new location. The Jefferson County South Service Center, at 11139 Bradford Road, houses the Sheriff's Office South Precinct and the Clerk & Recorder's South Jeffco Motor Vehicle Office.

The Sheriff's Office South Precinct used to be just down the road on Shaffer Parkway and the Clerk & Recorder's South Jeffco Motor Vehicle Office was previously located at 6004 South Kipling Parkway. The county relocated these offices to the South Service Center to consolidate services into one facility saving on rental costs, and to benefit the public by having multiple services under one roof in a convenient accessible location.

To contact the South Precinct, visit www.jeffco.us/sheriff or call 720-497-7200. For more information on the South Motor Vehicle Division, call 303-271-8100 or visit www.jeffco.us/mv.

Join Together for National Child Abuse Prevention Month

by Mallory Hyatt, Jeffco Human Services

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a month committed to raising awareness and preventing child abuse. A proclamation honoring National Child Abuse Prevention Month on Tuesday, April 3 will be read by the Jefferson County Commissioners at 8 a.m. at the Jefferson County Administration and Courts Building, Hearing Room One.

Somewhere in Jefferson County, a child is suffering because of abuse or neglect. While we may not like to think it can happen in this community, it does. In Jefferson County, 8,004 referrals of abuse were reported in 2011, a five percent increase from 2010. Abused and neglected children are part of the community and it will never be enough to intervene after abuse has occurred. Increased efforts to prevent abuse and raise awareness for the month of April include several activities which allow Jefferson County residents and employees to become involved.

Pinwheel gardens will be placed throughout the county in honor of this month. Pinwheel gardens are part of a national effort to effect measurable change in the public's beliefs and behaviors regarding the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Pinwheels for Prevention is a national awareness group that helps communities all across the U.S. plant similar gardens to support the victims of abuse.

"National Child Abuse Prevention Month is a time to increase awareness of child abuse and neglect and encourage the community to report any child abuse and become involved in supporting families and keeping children in our community safe, not just this month but all year long," states Mary Berg, Children, Youth & Families Division Director, Jefferson County Department of Human Services.

Show your support for child abuse prevention month by joining many prominent Colorado leaders for a rally on Wednesday, April 4. The rally, which will take place on the west steps of the State Capitol from 12 - 1:30 p.m., kicks off Child Abuse Prevention Month and will also be attended by legislators, Noble Energy CEO Ted Brown, and other prominent Colorado business leaders, and several coalitions that support the prevention and treatment of child abuse throughout the state of Colorado.

The community is also invited to support the Ralston House, a child advocacy center that helps children and teens who are suspected of being sexually or physically abused, by purchasing Cold Stone Creamery ice cream from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 5 at the Denver West location, 14239 West Colfax Avenue in Lakewood. Coupons will be available as customers enter Cold Stone.

Jefferson County constantly works to support families to ensure the safety of children, youth, and families but cannot do it alone. Groups, organizations and individuals throughout the community are highly encouraged to get involved in this effort. If you witness child abuse or even suspect it may be happening please call and report it through the Child Abuse Hotline at 303-271-HELP.
