Jeffco Sheriff Receives Nearly $339,000 in Grants
The BCC accepted three grants and approved the application of one more for the Sheriff's Office.

The three grants total $338,900, plus $127,500 in matching funds from the county, and will fund a variety of services, including hazard mitigation and emergency management.

  • $17,500 from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) for hazard mitigation planning for county cultural historic properties, museums and libraries. The grant is part of the 2010 State Hazard Mitigation Program and helps institutions begin preparedness planning for their inventories and collections. The county must match $17,500 for staffing, materials and supplies, and project management.
  • $110,000 from DOLA Division of Emergency Management, to help the county's Office of Emergency Management with operational costs. The county must make an in-kind match of $110,000.
  • $211,400 in limited gaming impact funds from DOLA. The state froze the grant program earlier this year in light of Colorado's budget problems. It recently announced it was lifting the freeze for the last half of 2010 and would accept applications. The Limited Gaming Impact Fund program allocates funding to entities that are impacted by the gaming activities in Colorado mountain areas. About $173,800 of the $211,400 will go to the District Attorney's Office. The rest will go to the Sheriff's Office.
The BCC also approved a grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice and Office of Community Oriented Policing Services to assist in funding two full-time investigators, one for crimes against senior citizens and the other for sexual offender registration and tracking. If awarded, the Sheriff's Office would receive three years of funding for the two positions, beginning in 2011. In 2015, the Sheriff's Office would be responsible for supporting both positions completely.
