BCC Approves Bike Ride on Deer Creek Canyon Road on June 20 Commissioners unanimously approved a bicycle ride, part of which will travel on 1.2 miles of Deer Creek Canyon Road on June 20.
The Denver Century Bicycle Ride will offer participants a 62-mile metric century ride, a 100-mile ride and a 22-mile fun ride that start and end at Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium. It is limited to 3,500 riders, but the organizer, a Deer Creek Canyon resident, anticipates only about 1,000. The ride through unincorporated Jefferson County begins on 32nd Avenue, just west of I-70, travels along West 32nd Avenue through Golden, up Lookout Mountain and then down into Morrison. Then, riders will travel along the C-470 bike path onto Deer Creek Canyon Road from South Valley Road, and then up to the C-470 bike path at Kipling Street and C-470 to the Platte River Bike Path. Only the century and metric century rides will use Deer Creek Canyon Road. The BCC heard from staff, the applicant and a resident at the public hearing on May 11. At the request of the applicant, the commissioners' vote was continued to May 18, when all three commissioners were present. All roads will be open to traffic during the ride. Law enforcement, as well as about 60 to 70 course marshals, will be on the route throughout the ride. The riders will have already climbed Lookout Mountain and will be spread out by the time they reach Deer Creek Canyon Road. Special events that occur on Deer Creek Canyon Road must go before the BCC for approval, according to the county's zoning resolution. |
BCC Designates Golden Transcript as County's Official Newspaper The BCC approved a resolution that designates the Golden Transcript, published by Mile High Newspapers, as the county's official newspaper.
State statutes require the county to publish certain legal notices in a designated "official newspaper." Jeffco requested bids for the cost of placing legal notices from the Golden Transcript, YourHub and The High Timber Times, which previously was designated as the county's official newspaper. The Golden Transcript had the bid with the best value. Commissioners also gave departments discretion as to whether to post other legal notices in any newspaper that meets statutory requirements depending on the department's needs for that notice. |
BCC Backs NACo Legislative Priorities for Building Codes and Social Security Commissioners approved a resolution that supports two legislative priorities from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The first priority would create a grant program under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support local building and fire code enforcement authorities in their efforts to protect residents from the devastation of natural disasters. According to a report from the National Institute of Building Sciences, every $1 spent on mitigation can save $3.65 on future expenses for disaster response and recovery. The second priority is urging legislation to eliminate the 24-month waiting period for health care coverage for people seeking assistance through Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). People qualify for SSDI when they have worked and paid in to Social Security and then become disabled. Federal law mandates a 24-month waiting period from the time a disabled person first receives SSDI benefits to the time that Medicare health coverage begins. In addition, the SSDI program delays benefits for five months while it determines whether the person has a qualifying disability. Many people waiting for Medicare coverage through SSDI are forced into poverty. According to the American Medical Association, death rates among SSDI recipients are highest within the first 24 months of enrollment. "Reducing the 24-month waiting period not only would prevent worsening illness and disability for SSDI beneficiaries, but would also reduce more costly future medical needs and potential long-term reliance on other public assistance programs," according to NACo's resolution. Jefferson County is one of about 2,000 counties that are members of NACo, a national organization that represents county governments in the United States. To learn more, visit the NACo website. |
