Postponed Citizen Input Meeting at Belmar Library To Be Held November 16
Jennifer Kostka, Citizen Involvement Coordinator

Citizen Input MeetingsThe Board of County Commissioners has rescheduled its Citizen Input Meeting at the Belmar Library in Lakewood for 6:30 p.m., Monday, November 16. The meeting was originally postponed because of the snowstorm that hit the Metro Area on October 28. The original meeting had been scheduled for Thursday, October 29.

This will be the final of four Citizen Input Meetings that Commissioners are holding throughout the County to give citizens the opportunity to weigh in on important issues. Attendees will learn about the current state of the county, use an interactive keypad system to answer questions from Commissioners, and have the opportunity to ask questions and comment on the issues that matter most to them.

To view results and video from the first meeting, give your own input regarding what the county is asking citizens through an online survey, or find directions to the November 16 meeting, visit the county's Transparent Jeffco Web site.

Details for the Belmar Library meeting:
Monday, November 16
6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Public Health School-Located H1N1 Clinics
Nancy Braden, Jeffco Public Health

Influenza UpdatesJefferson County Public Health, in partnership with Visiting Nurse Association, announced today upcoming H1N1 Flu vaccination clinics for children and their family members who are considered at high risk for developing complications from 2009 H1N1 influenza.  The H1N1 vaccine is currently available in limited quantities and these clinics are intended for those in the priority groups who are not able to get vaccine through their health care provider or who do not have a health care provider.

Jefferson County Public Health is following state and federal guidelines by offering its first supplies of H1N1 vaccine to Jefferson County residents in the priority groups detailed below:
  • Children 6 months through 4 years of age
  • Children 5 through 18 years of age who have chronic medical conditions
  • Pregnant women
  • People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age
  • Health care and emergency medical services personnel with direct patient contact
Initially, due to limited supplies of vaccine in the state, public health officials ask that only people in the priority groups listed above attend these school-located clinics. Others will have a chance to receive vaccines at future clinics or from their provider once more vaccine arrives.

Parenting Workshop Held at Mustang Center
Ray Washington, Workforce Center

"There is something about the outside of a horse that's good for the inside of a man." -- Winston Churchill

Parenting Workshop at the Mustang CenterThe Mustang Center was the scene of a "Cowboy-Up" activity and workshop on September 26 - 27, 2009, themed "Parenting - Communication and Leadership" for parents and their children. Twenty participants of the Jefferson County Human Services Fatherhood Program and their children shared in an "experiential" weekend of Equine-Assisted Learning.

Horse partners introduced parents to new information and families bonded through team-building, trust and communication exercises that they performed with their horse partners.  Because horses possess an amazing ability to mirror our human emotions, exposing our hidden attitudes and human agendas, specific exercises were conducted with the families and horses in a permission-based and safe environment, allowing for a variety of emotional responses from the participants. Some of the exercises were challenging, while others were comforting, rewarding and self-esteem building.

This mirroring of behavior from a horse can offer us opportunities to recognize and choose our behaviors. In this way, the horses are able to act both as teachers and healers for these families. Horses have innate healing power and are empowering and able to assist with the development of new insights, thought patterns and behaviors.

This was an exposure to a new territory for these families, with the specific intention to share and learn new techniques, which empowered them as individuals and families. Thoughts, stories, laughter and tears were shared.

Twenty families left the Mustang Center with refreshed relationships and new insights into themselves and one another. These parents are now better equipped to effectively communicate with and lead their families thanks to four-legged teachers!
