Public Health in the Mountains
by Kodi Bryant, Jefferson County Public Health

Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH), in partnership with the Evergreen Park and Recreation District (EPRD), invite mountain area families to join in a fun, educational event, "Public Health in the Mountains - Sun Up to Sun Down" on Thursday, August 6, from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The event will be held at Buchanan Field in Evergreen, 32003 Ellingwood Trail (Evergreen Parkway and Old Squaw Pass Road).

Living in the mountain area of Jefferson County offers both special rewards and unique public health challenges, such as playing on sports fields where elk and deer have recently roamed, riding bikes on rocky roads, and planning ahead for medical needs and the start of school.

In addition to invited guests and mountain area families, EPRD Special Needs and Summer Adventure Program children will be joining in the fun and activities.

"Public Health in the Mountains Sun Up to Sun Down" will focus on timely issues for mountain communities including:
  • Safe Sports and Recreation in Elk Country (Preventing Spread of E. Coli Illness)
  • H1N1 Influenza ("Swine" strain) and the Upcoming Flu Season -- What You Need to Know
  • Coexisting with Coyotes (Pet and Human Safety)
  • Children and Back to School Immunizations
  • Ideas for Healthy Sack Lunches and Safe Snacks Outdoors
This is Jefferson County Public Health's first event planned specifically for the mountain community during its year-long, 50th anniversary celebration. The event will feature both league sports and recreational exhibitions for kids and practical public health demonstrations that can help children and their families prepare for the upcoming flu season.

Take the opportunity to ask questions about the new H1N1 novel influenza strain and immunizations for your child and yourself.

So, as the sun rises on August 6, make plans to join us for a fun and educational morning. For more information, contact Jefferson County Public Health at 303-271-5700 or the Evergreen Park and Recreation District at 720-880-1100.

Community Orchard Day to Serve

Community Orchard Fence ProjectFeeding Many, Inc. invited the public for a day to serve on August 1, to complete the fence around the community orchard they started in April. Shirl Smith, President and CEO of Feeding Many, said they had approximately 75 volunteers help finish the task.

"I would like to thank each and every person who has dedicated time to this community orchard project -- it is much needed in our area," said Smith.

Several organizations were present to donate their time or goods, including five churches from the area and the Home Depot (Morrison Store). Starbucks donated hot coffee in the morning, and Papa Johns brought lunch.

Community Orchard TreesThe orchard is doing well with the amount of moisture the area has received this summer. Among the produce that will be ready for harvesting this fall will be Yellow Yukon Potatoes, and Red Potatoes. "Through a great deal of skepticism, this Orchard is in place, and will be of great need by people struggling in these hard economic times we all live in today," said Smith.

The next big project in the Orchard is to lay the stone in the center for the cross, along with solar lights. The project is planned for Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. Spring of 2010 will bring the planting of approximately 170 more trees, and 50 more grapes to bring the Orchard to it's full fruition. Feeding Many would is also investigating the placing of three solar green houses on the south east side of the Community Fruit Orchard it can be sustainable 12 months out of the year.

The Feeding Many Web site, www.feedingmany.org, will have volunteer opportunities, educational opportunities, times and dates for workshops on canning, and helpful tips on gardening, fertilization and useful recipes for fresh produce.
