City of Golden Receives Grant to Assess Community Values
by Emily Sander, Community Development
Golden City Council has accepted a grant in partnership with The Orton Family Foundation to conduct an intensive assessment of community values. The ultimate goal is to determine the city's "Heart and Soul" values, and to create the Golden Vision 2030 plan to guide future actions and decisions.

The driving force behind this initiative is to ensure city actions and decisions are consistent with the most important values of the community. The project began in March 2009, and will continue into 2010.

The city is currently holding weekly community events through the month of August, which are open to the public.  More information and details on these events can be found on the City of Golden Web site.
First Case of West Nile Virus in Jefferson County
by Nancy Braden, Jefferson County Public Health

Fite the Bite Mosquito PreventionJefferson County Public Health, in conjunction with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus for the 2009 Colorado season. The case was reported from Jefferson County, and the patient is recovering at home.

Individuals can reduce the number of mosquitoes by cleaning out gutters and other places around their homes where there are pools of standing water that are good breeding places for mosquitoes. Additional precautions to take against West Nile virus include:
  • Use precautions or avoid outdoor activities, such as gardening, at dawn and after dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • If outside at dawn or after dusk, cover up by wearing light, loose-fitting pants and long-sleeved shirts, shoes and socks.
  • Use approved mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
    • DEET products generally provide the longest protection.
    • Other repellents work, but must be applied more frequently.
    • Follow the product label for correct use.
    • Products with 10 percent or less DEET are recommended for children.
Prevention tips and additional information about West Nile virus is available online at www.FightTheBiteColorado.com

Federal Stimulus Funds Available in Jefferson County
by Emily Sander, Community Development
Jefferson County has been awarded $6.01 million in Federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) Funds through a statewide competitive process. Funds will be used to purchase, rehab, and return affordable homeownership opportunities to income-eligible residents throughout the county.

The Community Development Division is partnering with Pillar Properties, Inc. throughout the cities of Arvada and Lakewood. Additionally, the division is partnering with Wheat Ridge 2020 to implement the program in that community. The division is also facilitating the purchase of a foreclosed vacant lot in Golden in partnership with the Jefferson County Housing Authority to be developed into an estimated 60 units of affordable senior rental units over the next five years.

In addition, there are now $295,014 in Community Development Block Grant - Recovery (CDBG-R) and $589,891 in Community Services Block Grant-Recovery (CSBG-R) under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). All of the funds available through ARRA will be used to provide employment training, increase employment stability, and provide energy efficiency improvements throughout the county. See the Community Development Division Web site for more info.
Five-Year Strategic Plan in Process for Jeffco's Community Development Division
by Emily Sander, Community Development
Community Development is preparing a new Five-Year Strategic Plan for 2010-2015. The Plan is a requirement for the continuation of federal grants and also helps the division determine long-term goals and direct funds based on the true needs of the low to moderate-income population of the county.

A Housing Stock Assessment and Analysis will be conducted, as well as an analysis of Fair Housing and a provider survey.  All information will be available to the public and on the Community Development Web site upon completion.

A large part of the planning process depends on public involvement. The division has been working with its participating jurisdictions including Edgewater, Golden, Lakeside, Mountain View, Wheat Ridge and unincorporated Jefferson County, to assess community needs. This process will continue with additional outreach sessions, public surveys and the opportunity to comment on strategic plan goals and objectives.

A public notice for feedback will be posted in the High Timber Times in February 2010, with information on scheduled community meetings. The plan must be submitted to the Department of Housing and Urban Development in April 2010.
Volunteer Program Kicks Off Third Summer Hiking Club
by Kat Douglas, Jefferson County Human Services
The Jeffco Volunteer Hiking club is set to embark on its third season of adventures. The hiking club is part of Jefferson County's Children, Youth and Families Division (CYF) Volunteer Program and provides a chance for kids involved with CYF to explore the Colorado outdoors.

Chris, the hiking leader, has been guiding CYF youth on hiking trails for the past two years. "We wanted a chance to give back and be positive role models, so we started the hiking club to create some positive experiences for the kids. The hikes are not only fun, they help the kids build confidence and self-esteem."

The CYF Volunteer Program is proud to offer many diverse opportunities like the hiking club to community members interested in volunteering. The Volunteer Program enhances services and support for youth and families in the Jefferson County community.

If you are interested in learning more about Volunteer opportunities, please contact Korina Keating, Volunteer Coordinator at 303.271.4103 or cyfvolunteers@jeffco.us
Prevent Animal-Borne Disease This Summer
by Nancy Braden, Jefferson County Public Health
Animal-borne diseaseThe Jefferson County Public Health Department reminds residents that, as summer approaches, so does the risk of contracting certain animal-borne diseases that can be carried by various animals and insects (rodents, mosquitoes or ticks) and then transmitted to humans.

Such risk is higher during the summer when people tend to be outdoors more often and wild animals and insects are active. JCPH recommends everyone help control the presence of rodents and mosquitoes around their home; and, when heading outdoors, particularly to areas where wild animals and insects are active, wear insect repellant, appropriate clothing and protect your pets from fleas and ticks. Remember not to handle sick or dead animals or animal waste. A few precautions go a long way toward preventing animal-borne disease.

To learn more about the symptoms, treatments and information about these diseases and more, visit the Jefferson County Public Health Department Web site, Zoonosis Program page.
