When you go get your final check, you pretty much know whether the job went well or not so well-Right? PROJECT MANAGEMENT IS THE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL REFERRALS.
No matter what size your dealership, whether you have a project manager or not, these systems will work for your business. Talk about them, promote them , and separate yourself from your competitors. Prove your value, not your price remember?
Keys to Project Management systems.
A. A list of the steps needed to complete the project, complete with whose responsibility each task is.
B. A Pre Construction Meeting with all of the sub contractors. ( If your not getting paid for this, that your fault, and your client should not suffer). If your not in charge and your offer a pre construction meeting in front of your client and his contractor. This meeting is to review the kitchen plan, electrical layout, plumbing and HVAC/Ducting layouts BEFORE they are done.
C. You and your cabinet installer meet on the job to review the rough in after its completed. ( If he cant make it, You certainly are.) Be sure and have a clause in your contract that states that your not responsible for the location of the sub contractors required under the code/law, but you will assist them in facilitating a smooth project by providing guidance on the locations of fixtures and other devices required by....( Unless specifically contracted for of course)
D. You "pop" by the job after the drywall and floors are in to mark the location of the cabinets before they are delivered to see any problems that might have arisen. ( Electrical box in the wrong place, etc). Even if its only a day before you have at least put the appropriate contractor on notice so he can make the corrections.
E. NEVER, EVER play the BLAME GAME. Let others do that. Stay professional and curteous. The client will know who is responsibility it is. If its yours fix it, If its someone else, help them fix it-Simple. Your the Kitchen and Bath Professional.
Tired of spending precious SALES time managing others contractors and not getting paid. My Project Management System, teaches you how to sell the Service that you provide and will help you control the job more effectively
Have a profitable week!

Greetings!
I just got back from the Big Sky Chapter Meeting in Fort Benton Montana. What a great group of students and members that were enthusiastic and participated at a 100% level. The meeting was held at a historical renovation of a 125 year old hotel. It was renovated beautifully and had a very authentic 1880's Montana period style look and feel. It was the Grand Union in Fort Benton. Thank you to Arnie and Kendra Owen and the board for inviting me, I was truely honored. Kitchen and Bath people are great and the value of these friendships in this business are truely astonishing. More on the benefits of networking within our industry later....
I also met the winner of the 2007 GE Contest Mr Brian Johnson, AIA. Not only was he an enthusiastic attendee, but a presenter at the meeting as well. If Passion for design could power his laptop, he would have not needed to plug it in. He said something that I want everyone to hear. " You would be surprised how much your clients checkbook OPENS when you involve them in the process!!".
More on this later!

Kitchen Industry Networking, The Key to Success and Open Doors in Your Business and Career!!! One Never Knows Who they Meet and How They can help Your Career! |
|
Over the last 24 years I have met some great people that have opened doors and lit my career path along the way. Each of us attends cabinet product training meetings, NKBA meetings, and parties held at KBIS. If you don't attend, then START! Each of these meetings we network and meet other Industry Professionals. There of hundreds of these meetings each month in this country. Pay attention, listen rather than talk or worse brag. Let others talk about their success stories. I thought it would be useful to tell a couple of stories about how these meetings have created opportunities for the people involved.
The late Dave Maddox owned a cultured marble business in Tennessee and he was the owner and salesman. He knew very little about how to actually produce the product since he purchased and ongoing business. He had a major contract due one Monday Evening and he lost his PRODUCTION team. He was really in a bind. He went to a fellow he had met at a couple of meetings, they knew each other casually. It was only his MAJOR COMPETITOR, his name was Gary Stewart. Gary and Dave worked all weekend and got the job done. That's professional courtesy. They had hit it off and respected each other and no money was exchanged, Just a promise for a return favor. The favor was returned when Dave needed to expand his rep business and one of the few people he trusted with his business was Gary Stewart. When Dave suddenly passed, Gary was in a position to purchase the business and he is a very very successful representative with several agents working for him.
I told you that I met the winner of the 2007 GE National Design Contest. His name is Brian Johnson, AIA of Home site Designers in Montana. He did a presentation of his design and how hard they worked to achieve the Clients Vision. He reminded us all at that it is the clients vision we are supposed to create. Not Ours. He used a line that I will never forget. "You would be surprised how OPEN your Clients Checkbook gets when you involve them in the process!! Isn't that AWESOME. It is so true. He reminded us all, that we are the technical expertise side of our clients dream project. He also participated 110 % at my seminar, we developed a mutual respect and understanding of each others philosophy. When I got back Monday, a friend of mine called me and asked if I knew a good house designer in MONTANA!!! She had a client in Florida that was building a home there. I gave her his name, number and contact information. Now that is networking!
I attend KBIS with Leo Kelsey, CKD every year and have done so for 10 years or so. We met at a cabinet meeting and have been friends ever since. I can count on him for unbiased opinions and advice as my career has grown over the last decade. We met a mutual friend at that same meeting over 10 years ago, and now her career has taken off, and she has been instrumental at me speaking at a chapter meeting next year.
You just never know who you meet and how it can impact your career. Every time you go to a sales meeting or NKBA event, pay attention to the networking and positive vibes that people give off and get to know them. The information that you can gather over dinner or breakfast meeting is invaluable.
Ask yourself a question, how your mind can be open to New Ideas, Relearning Old Ideas and Meeting Positive people if you think you know it all already? When I speak at an event, I get all kinds of responses, thankfully 95% positive. I still have those "Cool People" that know it all and will do it their way forever. Rich & Successful people understand that they never stop learning. Obtaining new ideas and concepts is a constant source of empowerment for them. If you stop learning from other people then you have just put a CAP on your income based on your own knowledge and industry bias. Be aware when your mind is "labeling" another attendee because this behavior will keep you from being receptive to new ideas and ways to improve your business. We all have done it, now hopefully we can have more fun networking at events that you attend. When you become a positive force in the industry then you attract other positive people that can help you in your business or career.
Have a Profitable Week!!!
