Diabetes Alert Day is

March 22nd, 2011

The American Diabetes Association Alert Day is a one-day awareness campaign to inform the American public about the seriousness of diabetes. During the alert day, people are encouraged to help stop diabetes by taking a glucose test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Currently, 25.8 million Americans are living with type 2 diabetes and an additional 79 million, or one in every three American adults, are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that diabetes and its complications can be prevented by making simple lifestyle changes.

You can help create diabetes awareness in your office by:

1. Educating your employees about the risks of diabetes and how it can be prevented. Click here to download a free hand-out on diabetes prevention and healthy living.

2. Scheduling on-site glucose screenings for early detection and prevention for employees who may be at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

3. Providing an opportunity for your employees to start taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle by organizing an office wide 30 minute walk.

If you would like more information about on-site glucose screenings, please call (877) 292.5546, ext. 176 or email mmorris@affiliatedphysicians.net.

Eating Heart Healthy at Work

The office can be a tricky place to navigate once you've made the commitment to eating healthfully. So what's a healthy person to do? You're only human, after all, and delicious homemade cookies and cakes can be impossible to refuse.

The following tips to eating heart healthy at work will get on your way to becoming a more healthy and productive you!

1. Just say no! Often times, people eat junk food mindlessly just because it's there. Saying "NO!" out loud will bring you back into the present, preventing mindless eating.

2. Bring healthy snacks to work. Pre-pack baby carrots, fruits, and veggies to bring with you for when you feel the need to nibble. Fruits, like grapes, will help curve your sweet tooth.

3. Write down what you eat. It may seem like a chore, but writing down everything you eat, even for one week, along with your feelings at that time, may shed light on your eating habits.

5. Be aware of your schedule. If you have a meeting at 12pm, and you usually eat lunch at 1pm, don't count on getting out on time. Eat a snack before you go, or bring one with you.

6. Choose a health buddy. Chances are you're not the only person struggling with the temptations office life throws at you. Enlist the help of a coworker and be accountable to each other.

It's not always easy to stick to healthy eating at work, but with some determination and creativity, you can reach your goal of living a healthy lifestyle-even when it seems like every day is someone's birthday in the office.
