Mike Devine Sculpture
 Classes ...
..... and More

Look what Mike Devine, from New York, created in class last week.  Intriguing, isn't it?  It's titled The Sum of My Parts.

The piece isn't quite done, so he is calling it a work in progress, which, seems to me, to fit right in with the title.  After all, which of us is ever quite "done"? In life OR in art!

This year is turning out to be one of those years when we don't know quite what to predict in terms of class registrations.  We've had classes with 12 people, and some, like the one that Mike attended, with only one.  But they all seem to work out.  Last week, watching Mike work, and seeing my own piece (below) take shape, was one of my favorite weeks this year.

If you'd like to come to one of our longer classes, but can only come for a few days, do give us a call and maybe we can work something out.

Coming up are a series of one-day classes devoted to garden art, such as a Mushroom Gnome, a Face for the Garden Wall and a Fairy house.   We also have a 5-day FACES class in June, followed by a delightful Female Figure Class with Diane Keeler.  Then we end the month with one of the cornerstones of our work here at Maureen's which is The Dollmaking Circle with Barb Kobe.

Using What A Character Push Mold A

While Mike was busy last week creating his Mixed Media Sculpture, I (Maureen) created a new design, as well.  The title of this interactive piece is All My Life's a Circle: Stackables #1 (yes, sounds like a series is coming ...).

I decided to use the What A Character Mold A for the face in order to have more time to work on all the movable discs which make up the body. We're thinking of offering this as a class or a downloadable project.  Interested?

Bridging the Universe One Card at a Time

Cathy in Star TribuneWhat fun to open the Minneapolis, MN Star and Tribune newspaper last week (Wednesday) and see former employee Kathy Isles featured on the front page of the SouthExtra section, covering the southern suburbs.  Kathy (who, by the way, worked briefly at Maureen's in 2008) has a passion for greeting cards.  And not just any old greeting card.  You have only to hear Kathy laugh to know that her card designs are full of all of the fullness that makes up our lives, including the happy and the sad and the irreverant and ...

Conversations with Maureen: Remembering To Be Thankful

Sometimes we lose track of why we do what we do.  Being a small business, and mostly home-based, with the internet as our main point of connection, we forget how important it is that individual, real people are out there looking at what we're doing, and actually reading it, and even caring about what we say.

Then we get a phone call, like the one that Dan received this morning from Karen.  And we remember.

Of course it's always nice when there is an exchange of resources involved, such as money for a product or a service that we provide, as that's how we stay in business.  But it's not the only way that we stay in business.  In order to keep doing what we do we need heart and passion and energy and conviction.  Conviction that there is real value in sharing the creative life.  Conviction that our tools and books and space for retreats and classes allow people to access their own creativity and their own potential for wholeness.

When we quit believing that, it will be time to stop what we're doing and go work for someone else.  Or maybe retire.

I do believe that we're each a potential beacon of light for the other.   Sometimes we're primarily the sender and at other times the receiver, but mostly we're both at the same time.  It's a fact that roles change; people change; needs change.  But, just often enough, like the revolving circles in my sculpture pictured at the top of this newsletter, our circles intersect, and something important is shared or exchanged or witnessed. When that happens, we need to pay attention, for each of those moments is timeless.  And it's those timeless moments that make all this worth while.

As I was writing this I remembered that just last month I featured a lovely email from a reader who was responding to something that I wrote.  Hmmmm, maybe the reason for my slight melancholy at present is that I forget too quickly the good that we have and the good that we do and the good that you all share with us.

So, in case I haven't said it lately, a big THANK YOU to all of you for being there.  None of us create in a vacuum.  We appreciate your business, your friendship, your inspiration, and your witnessing to - and feedback about - the creative life.

Going along humming a juggling tune,

Maureen Carlson
