Kathleen Baird
Garden Sees a Steady Parade of Creativity

It has been a busy spring and summer at Maureen's, with students coming from 18 states as well as Canada and England. The ever-expanding cottage garden, which wraps around our building, has been a perfect backdrop for class photos.

Pictured is Kathleen Baird (IL) who came for a 2-day private class in May.  She is holding one of the polymer clay creations that she made after watching one of my segments on the Carol Duvall Show.  What an inspiration to see how Kathleen used her creativity to add life and color and magic to my original concept.  You'll see more of her work at MaureenCarlson.com - once I stop teaching and traveling long enough to focus on the website once again!

Last week found Shirley Chipman (GA ), Mary O'Connor (MI), Elizabeth Ressler (FL and MN) and myself climbing around on the river bank as we arranged our story characters in what we hoped was a natural setting for them.  Look for some of these photos to show up on the website as well.  The theme of the class was the creation of story characters, complete with the beginnings of their story in print and on paper.  I'll be doing this class again in 2008 as I loved the process.  It is one thing to make a clay character, but a much fuller process to expand on it's story in a way that makes the character come nearly to life.

Next week I'll be on retreat myself in Colorado.  Some of the things that I'll be working on are ideas for 2008 - and ways to keep my own energy deep and centered and grounded so that Maureen at Maureen's can continue to encourage and teach, share and celebrate with all of you who come this way.

I feel priviledged and blessed to be a part of the process.

A thought to ponder:

I was listening to the audio tape of the book, Fish! Tales when this quote by Thomas Merton caught my attention:

"The rush and the pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of innate violence.  To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to committ to too many projects, to want to help everyone and everything, is to succumb to violence.  More than that, it is to cooperate with violence.  The frenzy of the activist neutralizes his work for peace.  It destroys her inner capacity for peace.  It destroys the fruitfullness of his own work because it kills the root of inner wisdom which makes work fruitful."

In this busy summer, when I find myself rushing from one deadline to the next, all with good intent and with a good heart, I still find myself wondering if I am making the right decisons as to how I use my time - and my gifts.  I'll think on that next week while I am on retreat in Colorado.
