Women's Leadership Council's
7th Power of the Purse is History
| Gail Nelson, past co-chair of the first Power of the Purse, enjoys attending every year and helps on the day of the event as a volunteer. |
The June 19th luncheon, auction and program offered something for everyone whether it was the inspirational message from guest speaker Michele Norris, finding that great purse at the popular Silent Purse Auction, enjoying the Flower Power Challenge's beautifully decorated centerpieces (and maybe purchasing one) or trying your chance at winning one of the Sarah's Hope jewelry sets at the new Tree of Chance.
Here are some of the results of Power of the Purse -
- 530 attendees
- Proceeds of $61,000 raised
- 12,128 Imagination Library books for over 1,000 children made possible
- Over 300 donated items to the silent purse auction
- Winners of the jewelry sets donated by Hight-Randall, Personal Jeweler were: Jean Murray (WLC member), Julie Cords and Valerie Mathias
- Event sponsors included Eastwood Bank, Mayo Clinic, Think Mutual Bank, Rochester Athletic Club, Kahler Grand Hotel and Rochester Magazine.
What makes Power of the Purse an event not to be missed is our community of givers who realize that each person and each donation can have a big collective impact on people's lives when we LIVE UNITED.
Thank you to the many WLC members who volunteered with event preparations and planning and those who helped on the day of the event to make this a great success!

WLC Member Interview with Dr. Annette Smick
| | Annette ,wearing her 1959 Vintage Vogue re-creation in the Surf Ballroom lobby at the Winter Dance Party, ready to dance the night away 50's style. |
As a staff psychiatrist in private practice with Associates in Psychiatry and Psychology, WLC member Dr. Annette Smick has a particular interest in mental health issues affecting children and families. The affect that these issues have on the achievement of educational goals for children concerns her. Annette observes that "if children are healthy and have healthy home environments, the fewer the stresses for them."
Annette learned about the Women's Leadership Council when she attended her first Power of the Purse a number of years ago. The appeal of networking with professional women and more involvement in the community got her attention.
With a father who was a chemistry teacher, she had planned to be a biology professor but along the way made the decision to instead pursue a career in medicine. Annette is a graduate of Mayo High School and St. Thomas University. One significant thing about this is that Annette attended St. Thomas just after it went co-educational; the ratio was 120 women to thousands of men - dating was not an issue! Annette went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1988 and trained at Mayo in adult psychiatry and a child and adolescent fellowship. Prior to her current practice, she held positions with hospitals in Winona and Eau Claire and for five years was the Medical Director at Zumbro Valley Mental Health Center.
For fun she enjoys live music, concerts, theater and art museums. Annually you can find Annette at the Winter Dance Party at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. She doesn't just attend but relives the era wearing the 1950's and 1960's costumes. Her enjoyment of nostalgia also includes participating in Rendezvous encampments - complete with period costume dress, cooking over a pit, no running water and trying to rough it (somewhat) like a voyageur.
Annette's favorite childhood book was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. One of her reasons for this choice is that while attending Golden Hills Elementary she won a drawing to be the first student to check out the library's brand new copy. That and the fact that it is about chocolate made it just about perfect. "All is perfect with chocolate," she explains.
A community (and statewide) issue concerning Annette are the therapeutic services for children dealing with stress. Annette related that a state shortage of school counselors has resulted in a ratio of 800 students to one counselor. This lack of availability and the lack of insurance for therapeutic care leads to greater mental health issues for children as they grow.
Thank you Annette for choosing to be part of the Women's Leadership Council!
