10 Who Make a Difference
The difference Wendy Sempf made when she started volunteering with Operation Hometown Gratitude two years ago was evident. Through her efforts tracking military service members' addresses and filling out customs forms, the group went from sending 20 care packages a month to 20 per week.
Sempf is among the volunteers recognized with a 10 Who Make A Difference award.
The awards, from the United Way of Olmsted County's Volunteer Center in partnership with KTTC-TV, honor volunteers in southeastern Minnesota and northern Iowa in six categories: adult, youth/youth group, senior/senior group, business, family unit, and group.
Other winners this year are:
* Melissa Brinkman * Canadian Honker Enterprises
* Dan Christianson
* Christmas Anonymous * Geraldine Hackman * The Podein Family * Hy-Vee Food Stores of Rochester * Rochester Teen Council
* Senior Corps

Consider Joining the United Way of Olmsted County Speaker's Bureau!
 | |
Sue Parker - Speaker |
We are looking to add additional members to our 2012 Speaker's Bureau and would like you to consider joining our team of community volunteers. Speaker's Bureau members make 5-10 minute presentations during employee meetings as part of the annual workforce campaign. Most campaigns take place during the August-November time period and the number of presentations you make is up to you, based upon your availability and interest.
You do not have to be an experienced or polished public speaker; all that is required is the ability to speak from the heart, and tell your 'story' as to why you think supporting the community is important! We will provide training and talking points for you to use in crafting your personalized message.
If you have an interest, or are not certain, but would like to learn more, please contact Neal Engelman at 507-529-4505 or email at neale@uwolmsted.org. I will set up a time to meet with you to share more details and answer any questions that you might have. I look forward to hearing from you! | |

Through the community effort of the Running Start for School program any child who is eligible for free or reduced lunch can also receive a donated backpack and basic supplies. Over 7,000 children are eligible.
What can you do? Be a drop site for supplies, hold a drive, volunteer for sorting and distribution, collect contributions, spread the word, get involved today at:

Power of the Purse 2012

Eastwood Bank with Michele Norris |
The 7th annual Power of the Purse on June 19th was again a huge success. 530 attendees were inspired by guest speaker Michelle Norris.
In addition to the luncheon and keynote, the event included the very popular Silent Purse Auction, A Tree of Chance and the Flower Power Challenge. Event proceeds will provide over 12,050 Imagination Library books which will increase literacy and help our young children successfully transition into school!
Talk about power! That's enough to distribute one book a month to more than 1,000 children of the 6,000 children enrolled in the Imagination Library program in Olmsted County.
The Women's Leadership Council of the United Way of Olmsted County, the Power of the Purse event volunteers, and, of course, all of the recipient children and families are grateful for the support of everyone attending, the sponsors and the individuals and businesses for their donations of purses, products and services. Event sponsors included Eastwood Bank, Mayo Clinic, Think Mutual Bank, Rochester Athletic Club, Kahler Grand Hotel and Rochester Magazine.
What makes Power of the Purse a success each year is our community of givers who realize that each person and each donation can have a big collective impact on people's lives when we LIVE UNITED.
