Power of the Purse

Spring is when I start seeing cute purses popping up everywhere! I wonder where they are all hiding when I am searching for the perfect purse - which, in fact, is most of the time! But also, which purse will raise the most money for the Imagination Library during the Seventh Annual Power of the Purse Silent Auction and Luncheon on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. The silent purse auction has attracted more than 300 purse donations in the past - from designer labels to local creations and from classic to unusual styles. Our fabulous purse auction committee is already hard at work trying to find those "hidden gems" out there in the community.

Power of the Purse is sponsored by United Way of Olmsted County's Women's Leadership Council. This event benefits the Imagination Library which provides a book a month to enrolled Olmsted County children, from birth to age 5. Currently, we have over 6,000 children enrolled in the program which is about 53% of the eligible children in Olmsted County. There is no cost to the family and children enrolled in this program and they are so excited to receive their very own book in the mail each month!

Join us on June 19 for the Seventh Annual Power of the Purse Silent Auction and Luncheon to support the Imagination Library. Check out our web site for more details, how to donate purses, as well as purchase tickets: http://www.uwolmsted.org/pop

Six Questions with WLC Member Elaine Case

Elaine Case and Bill WiktorWhy did you join the Women's Leadership Council?

I will fully admit that when I joined many years back it was at the prodding of my good friend Tammy Watson-Schram. Bill and I have always been big supporters of the United Way and I was always proud of IBM's employee contributions in terms of average gift and percent participation. I didn't know much about the council until Tammy explained the intent and in particular the Imagination Library. My father was a University English professor and as a kid we lived surrounded by books. It was ingrained into our lives and that continued with my own children. Anyway, the mission of the WLC struck a wonderful chord for me and I've been a member ever since. When I was asked to help co-chair the Power of the Purse Auction for 2012, I gladly accepted the opportunity. Read More about Elaine

Meet WLC Member Sue Parker

Sue Parker and FamilySue Parker owns over 50 pairs of shoes and belongs to a shoe of the month club. With Sue Parker's passion for shoes and purses, serving as a co-chair of the 2012 Power of the Purse silent purse auction, is a "good fit".

This is not Sue's first volunteer endeavor helping United Way. Sue's other leadership roles have involved her in United Way workplace campaigns as an Employee Campaign Coordinator and on the campaign cabinet for two years. Sue served on the planning team for the 2009 event, Remember the Ladies (the first Maude Finch Awards) when it was part of Power of the Purse. This year finds Sue and Elaine Case co-chairing the donations for the silent purse auction.
