Wild About Reading - April 2011
Changing Lives

"The imagination library has been a very exciting program for all of my children (ages 6, 5 and 3). It has inspired a love for reading in all three. We read to all three of our kids every night and encourage it throughout the day and the Imagination Library books are definitely a favorite. Our oldest has always loved books and just finished Kindergarten and is reading at the fourth grade level.  We attribute a big part of this to the Imagination Library books that she received. I am a big fan of the program and support it through my donations to the United Way."- Derick

Introducing WLC Member

Lori Lonergan Brennan

On a summer day off from her job as a Major Gifts Officer for Mayo Clinic, Lori and husband Tim could be enjoying a new found adventure - kayaking the backwaters of the Mississippi River. Taking on a bigger challenge with their new skill, they plan to kayak on Lake Superior in September. In the winter months, Lori and Tim strap on their snowshoes and tramp through the woods especially enjoying the Duluth area.

Lori recently observed her 30th year of employment with Mayo Clinic. No stranger to taking on new adventures, after the youngest of her 3 children finished high school Lori returned to school herself. She completed her Bachelor's degree, went on to complete an MBA from Augsburg College and is currently working on her doctorate in Education & Leadership from St. Mary's University. Her accomplishments are equally impressive when one learns that Lori became a single parent with young children when her first husband passed away. She is appreciative that all her hard work has been recognized as she has advanced in her career with Mayo. On a regular basis, her business travels take her to the lower Central United States.

Fighting Hunger - One Backpack at a Time

Channel One's Backpack Program

Fighting Hunger...Children learn best when they feel good and they are not hungry. Unfortunately for some children their weekend time away from school does mean they go hungry. Without a free or reduced price lunch at school the weekend means little food or maybe no food at home.   Channel One began a program in 2009, working in conjunction with a local church, to deliver backpacks full of weekend food to kids in two Rochester Public Schools. Currently they are partnering with ACTS For Kids organization and several area churches.
