Greetings from the State Coordinator

Greetings!

What a fantastic History Day year it has been!  Our participation numbers from the school and regional levels are in, and 2009-2010 was another year of growth for New York State History Day!

This year, 158 schools, 201 teachers, and around 8,600 students participated in History Day across the state.  Overall, we had 12% increase in school participation and an 2% growth in student participation.  Congrats to all the teachers and students who helped grow our program.

I also want to give a round of virtual applause to our regional coordinators.  They worked hard to put on the regional level contests, and they deserve our gratitude!

Thank you to Patricia Jordan - Capital, Mary Ann Luciano - Catskill, Scott Peal - Central NY, Ed Varno - Finger Lakes, Maria Neale - Genesee Valley, Robbie Harte and Susan Glaser - Long Island, Kathleen MacNaughton - Lower Hudson, Franny Kent and Stephanie Dueno - NYC, Rich Strum - North Country, Kerry Lippincott - Southern Tier, Linda Harvey - Western NY, and John Staples, Western Southern Tier.

This issue is a little lean, as we are working feverishly to prepare for the 450 students coming to Cooperstown in three weeks for the State Contest.  We'll be back in full force in May with all the state contest results.

Best wishes,
Tobi Voigt
A Big NYS History Day Thank You!

NYSHD LogoFor the last two months, we've asked you to help support New York State History Day's bid for renewed state funding.

You responded in full force, writing letters to your legislators, contacting your local officials, and sharing your History Day stories.

We are pleased to report that all your hard work has paid off; the funding that the New York State Historical Association receives to run New York State History Day has been renewed for the 2009-2010 program year!

We have been included in the State Education Budget as a one-time Special Legislative Project.  We will be spending our summer continuing to promote History Day in the hopes of gaining more permanent funding in the state budget for future years.

In the meantime, we would like to express our debt of gratitude to you - the History Day teachers, parents, and students - for helping our state legislators see the magic that happens when students engage with their local, state, national and world history through this remarkable program.

We could not have succeeded without you.  Thank you!
