March 2009
Volume 3 - Issue 7
Greetings from the State Coordinator

Greetings!

Two things are certain each March: there's lots of mud in Cooperstown and New York State History Day regional competitions begin. John and I are excited to start traveling across the state to attend as many contests as possible.

Last weekend I was at Hofstra University for the Long Island contest. It was my first contest of the season, and it was fabulous. Seeing the student work and talking to them about their topics reminded me why this program is important.  The 376 students who participated in the contest were the experts, and the other judges and I were blown away by the quality of the research and analysis we saw. It's not just a day, folks; History Day is a life-changing experience!

I am looking forward to seeing more student projects this month.  I will be at the Central New York, Lower Hudson, Capital, and New York City contests this year.  John will be at the Catskill contest.  If you see us around, stop by and say hello!

Best wishes,
Tobi Voigt
Encore Article: NYS History Day Needs Your Help

NYSHD LogoWe still need your help to ensure that the New York State History Day program remains strong in the years ahead!

Funding provided in the New York State Education Department budget has enabled us to expand the program over the past three years. Statewide participation has nearly tripled. Our program staff has provided National History Day curriculum materials to participating schools free of cost, increased our in-person teacher and student trainings, and developed comprehensive lesson plans and curricula.

With the current economic crisis and pending state budget cuts, the New York State Historical Association is working hard to continue the annual $180,000 in state support for the New York State History Day program. Please help us by contacting your state senator and assembly member and asking them to support New York State History Day.

Here's how you can help:

  • Download our Action Alert document, which provides more information and a sample letter/email that you can use to contact your local legislators.
  • Visit www.congress.org and type in your zip code to find contact information (address and email) for your state senator and assembly member.
  • Fax, mail or send your customized letters or e-mail as soon as possible.

Thank you for your continued support of New York State History Day!

Albany Student Presents on NHD at Educator Conference

Brendan Blendell, a Junior at the Doane Stuart School in Albany, was invited to present a scholarly paper at the annual meeting of the the Association of Gifted and Talented Education in New York. The conference was held in October 2008 at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York.

The title of paper and presentation was: "National History Day as a Model Program for Whole School Enrichment".

In his presentation, Brendan (who is pictured above with State Senator James Seward at the 2007 New York State History Day contest) gave an overview of the National History Day program. He then addressed how it links to Sternberg's multiple intelligence and Renzulli's three-ring model of giftedness theories. He demonstrated that National History Day is a model program for whole school enrichment. He ended by showing his 2008 NHD entry, which won first place at the Capital Region competition, Tin Soldiers and Nixon Comin': Anti-War Songs of the 1960s.

Congratulations, Brendan!
