Greetings from the State Coordinator

Greetings!

I loved spending time last month traveling to several of the regional contests. Seeing the student work and hearing about their experiences moves me so deeply that I often get a little teary.  (Some of you may have noticed that!)

I was pleased to see so many new districts and schools participating this year.  New York City History Day brought on 14 new schools, while the Lower Hudson region saw 9 new schools join from Yonkers alone.  Our upstate participation also grew significantly, with several teachers and students participating in our new Western Southern Tier region. Despite the geographic split, the Southern Tier region saw participation growth with their contest. I saw several entries from Canandaigua schools this year at the Finger Lakes contest, which hosted the district in competition for the first time.  And the Catskill region quadrupled the number of schools participating in their contest in just one year!

Thank you to all of you, from the students, teachers, and parents, to the hard working staff members at our regional offices, to the administrators and supervisors who see the educational value of this program.

As this History Day year is drawing to a close, I hope to see you all (and many many more) around the state next year, when the Annual Theme will be "The Individual in History."

Best wishes,
Tobi Voigt

Testimonials From Fairfax County High School Students:

"I love being able to mark my sources, and then have them readily available when I switch computers. Not having to save my work constantly was a huge help to me-- it was always just the way I left it!" - Kayley

"Zotero is probably one of the best things since... since... well, I can't think of anything at the moment, but it's just good. It's very nice to be able to have, right within my Firefox browser, the ability to grab sources from web-pages without too much window-switching" - Masood

New York State Archives Student Research Awards
The New York State Archives announces its 18th annual Student Research Award to promote and recognize excellence in student research. The award has 2 primary purposes:
  • Encourage students to explore the wealth of historical records in New York State
  • Increase cooperation between schools and organizations that administer historical records useful for education

The Student Research Awards program is a statewide competition open to all New York State students in grades 4-12. A total of three awards will be given, on each for students in grades 4-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12.

Each award consists of a certificate and cash prize. Certificates of Merit will be awarded to those entries, other than the winners, that show a heavy reliance on historical records to support their research.

Eligible entry types include research papers, exhibits, documentaries, performances, proposals for designation of historic marker/property/district, web sites, PowerPoint presentations, and other computer-based entries.

Both individual students and groups of students (including the entire class) may be nominated, and all nominations must be made by a teacher or administrator in the school attended by the student or group of students.

Entries submitted for competition must be researched and developed during the July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008 school year, and History Day projects are eligible if they meet the other relevant criteria, especially the use of historical records.
For official guidelines and entry forms, visit: www.archives.nysed.gov and click on "Education"

The submission deadline is July 1, 2008!
