Greetings from the State Coordinator
Greetings!
Oh, boy. It's that time of year again: Competition time. I know this not only because I am planning the state contest, but also because of the large number of questions I have been getting about contest and category rules.
I figure you all have a copy of it taped to your left hands these days, but in the off-chance that your dog ate your contest rule book, you can download a new one here: www.nyshistoryday.org/rules.htm.
Will this be your first time competing for History Day? Then make sure you check out the " What to Expect" section of our website. Hopefully it will alleviate some of your jitters by familiarizing you with how contests work. You can read all about it here: www.nyshistoryday.org/WhattoExpect.htm
Good luck to you all, and have a happy month of history!
Sincerely,
Tobi Voigt |

| Oral History Training Opportunity
If you are working on an oral history project or are thinking about taking one on, consider applying for this year's Oral History Institute, June 3-5 on the beautiful campus of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
The program trains participants in planning and conducting successful oral history projects. Emphasizing hands-on experience, topics covered in the two-and-a-half-day schedule include framing questions, interviewing techniques, transcribing and archiving, and devising public programs based on oral history. To develop these skills, participants will work on a practice project that encompasses all stages of oral history and will also have time to consult with experts about planned projects. Sessions will also be available on videotaping interviews and on fundraising.
The faculty consists of professors from the fields of History, Sociology, Archiving, and Telecommunications who all have extensive experience with Oral History.
Volunteers or paid staff from local historical organizations, libraries, schools, and colleges and universities are encouraged to apply. Admission to the institute is limited to thirty and is competitive. The cost is $250, which includes two nights stay, six meals, and all workshop materials.
The Oral History Institute is co-sponsored by the Ohio Humanities Council and The Rural Life Center at Kenyon College, in cooperation with Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums and the Ohio Historical Society. | |
