Greetings from the State Coordinator
Greetings!
Happy New Year! Based on the number of inquiries I have received lately about History Day projects, I gather that many of you and your students have resolved to make 2008 a great year of history. I can't wait to learn all about your topics at the regional contests in March.
Check the registration deadlines and print a registration form. Remember, paper and web site entries are due at the registration deadline!
As always, John and I are here to help you through the entire History Day process. Contact us at nyshistoryday@nysha.org with all your questions. Don't forget that you can also contact your regional coordinator with your questions about this first round of competition.
Have a happy month of history!
Sincerely,
Tobi Voigt |

Encore Article: Project Resources
Although this article appeared in last month's newsletter, we thought it was worthy of a second publication.
The time to start creating History Day projects is right around the corner. To make it easier on you and your students, here are a few links to resources that you may find helpful:
Project Examples:
Project Tips from National History Day:
The most comprehensive tool for creating History Day projects is National History Day's Making History Series. The workbooks not only provide teachers with step-by-step guidance on how to conduct historical research, but also give students direction on how to create NHD projects. You can purchase an entire set or individual copies at the NHD online store: http://www.nhd.org/cart. |
New Teacher Resources Online
The New York State History Day office is pleased to announce new online resources that will help teachers structure History Day participation at their schools or in their classrooms. A new "Getting Started" section of the Teacher Support Center now includes:
Although these resources will be the most helpful at the start of each History Day year, teachers may want to visit them now to make sure they have covered all the program particulars this year. |
| Students Invited to Share Project at Berlin, Germany Museum
High School students Dieter Ulken & Yale Weiss of Cooperstown Central School will present their 2007 National award winning exhibit, An Airlift Saves A City - Berlin: Divided but not Conquered, at the Allied Museum, Berlin, Germany in 2008. The exhibit will be included in a special 60th anniversary exhibit in 2008-2009, and will subsequently become part of the museum's permanent collection. In addition, the German Embassy in Washington D.C. has asked to include the project as part of a U.S. touring exhibit in 2008. A film and photos of the exhibit will continue on that tour after the actual display will be flown to Berlin, Germany. Their project was also part of the 2007 Berlin Airlift Veterans Association Reunion in Norfolk, VA in October 2007. At the reunion, Ulken made a presentation to more than 100 Airlift pilots and other veterans, including the famous Airlift Candy Bomber Colonel Gail Halvorsen. Both Ulken and Weiss have been made honorary members of the Airlift Veterans' Association. | |
