Greetings from the State Coordinator

Greetings!

Happy Holidays!  The weather outside may be frightful, but inside the New York State History office, things are simply delightful!  We are reaching the nitty-gritty part of our History Day year.  Students should be well on their way with research and many will spend the holiday break contemplating their project categories and outlining their strategy for creating their final product.  As always, we want to help them on their way, so we've included a list of project resources below that they may find helpful.

I love to hear stories about students' successes with History Day, especially when the stories show how it impacts students lives and learning outside of the scope of the program. This month I am grateful to Susan Glaser, librarian at Commack High School on Long Island, for sharing her student's success.  Do you have a History Day story?  Let us know at nyshistoryday@nysha.org.  We'll feature it in our monthly newsletter.

As always, John and I wish you all a happy month of history!

Sincerely,
Tobi Voigt
Project Resources
The time to start creating History Day projects is right around the corner.  To make it easier on you and your students, here are a few links to resources that you may find helpful:

Project Examples:
Project Tips from National History Day:

The most comprehensive tool for creating History Day projects is National History Day's Making History Series. The workbooks not only provide teachers with step-by-step guidance on how to conduct historical research, but also give students direction on how to create NHD projects. You can purchase an entire set or individual copies at the NHD online store: http://www.nhd.org/cart.

Student to Present History Day Research to Public Library Audience
Elias HicksOn February 4, 2008, Commack High School Student Lauren Katz will share her History Day research and analysis with her local community in a lecture at the Jericho Public Library.

Lauren's presentation is based on her 2007 Senior Individual Exhibit, "The Light Within: A Triumph of Friendly Persuasion over Slavery," which tells the story of Jericho native Elias Hicks. Hicks was a Quaker preacher who railed against slavery in the early 19th century.  His liberal views, including his ardent abolitionism, contributed to a theological conflict within the Quaker Church, which ultimately led to a schism in 1827.

Lauren's project won third place at the 2007 New York State History Day competition and an Honorable Mention at the 2007 New York State Archives Student Research Awards. For the project, Lauren collected a wide array of primary and secondary sources, many from the local history collection at the Jericho Public Library.  Lauren's presentation on February 4th is part of the library's Black History Month celebration.
