March 29, 2012
Aging is a natural part of life, and yet most of us resist - or even deny - our own aging process. In part, I blame our culture and our society's unrealistic expectations. We  are pressured to conform to a youth-obsessed concept of beauty and to, in the words of the rock and roll song, stay "forever young."

Aging involves a series of stages (or processes of) letting go. And those who hold on or resist - those who don't soften to WHAT IS - wind up adding layers of suffering to the experience. In looking at our own aging - or the aging of someone dear to us - we must come to terms with what we need to release, so we can move on to the next experience with (some) ease. And yes, there is grief in this process.

Grief serves a purpose! We are better off if we resist the urge to look away from it and instead make room for it in our lives. We'd love to skip over the pain or difficulties, but it's healthier if we can cultivate a level of acceptance and see it as a transformation.

AGING IS TRANSFORMATION
With aging, we each get to evolve into our "next self."

As we look frankly and with open hearts at what happens to our minds and bodies as we age, we can discover profound truths - whether we are "spiritual" or not. Aging can be a time rich with the possibility of finding new meaning and purpose. This is not always easy but this is essential for a peaceful attitude and restful heart. And although we are letting go of certain abilities and cherished dreams, many of us are also letting go of caring what others think of us, of relationships that bog us down, or of needing to appear differently from how we actually feel on the inside.

Ultimately, the aging process is a time for uncovering priorities, which can be a very fulfilling and liberating experience.

As a therapist who looks to integrate the mind, body and spirit, I observe an individual's physical response to aging and the emotional layers associated with it. Assessing the body's changes as well as the mind's and heart's perspective holds a doorway of potential. I help clients find relief from their anxiety, let go of a level of holding, and help them deepen their understanding of where they are in life. Connecting to the total self helps people move into the natural flow of life.

Mind-body practices (yoga postures, simple breathing or meditative exercises) help you connect to the heart of the matter quite quickly. In turn, your inner truths and wisdom emerge, ultimately integrating the deepest parts of you. In this way, we are more prepared for the journeys ahead.

Ram Dass
For your Reflection
This video is part one of a series on Conscious Aging, presented by spiritual teacher Ram Dass. In this series, Ram Dass calls us to move beyond our youth-fixated culture to a place where we can see clearly that the final years of life are just as creative and fulfilling as the first.  The video is nearly two hours long, with a wealth of information. Let me know what you think!

Would you like a workshop developed for your business, personal or family setting?

I have been developing and facilitating workshops and groups for almost 30 years. The workshops or groups can be traditional (providing information and process) or mind--body (incorporating yoga and/or other physical connections to the body.)

Please email me to discuss the MANY options -

- Co-creating one together
- Letting me create one just for you (based upon extensive   interviewing.)
- Implementing a  workshop you have already developed.

I look forward to our conversations.  Thank you!
