I can pretty much assume that whoever is reading this has had some experience with back pain. Just about every adult has, and if you have not, I congratulate you.
Back issues can have a variety of triggers. Stress, posture, injury, or simply the way we are using our bodies, (and often a combination of two or more) can all contribute to the pain. Traditional medicine can offer assistance, but I find that a holistic approach to back care is the most effective.
I remember many of my early gurus telling me, "We are as healthy as our back." That stuck; It is so true. And working to alleviate back pain, especially if it is chronic, asks us to commit to a new relationship/understanding of back care.
The psychological and spiritual responses to the pain itself are often overlooked or discounted in traditional medical settings, but they can be just as important to address as the actual physical aspects of the pain. Our self-esteem, our place in the world, our relationships are all affected, especially if our activities are limited or mobility changed.
My holistic approach to back care starts with a thorough assessment of the whole person - what's happening physically and emotionally, how your life style, stress, posture, sleep habits, etc affect your back.
Together, we work out an individualized plan to address your particular discomfort. I offer yoga training for flexibility and strength, and counseling to determine what lifestyle changes will work for your situation. I teach relaxation techniques and strategies to help you change your posture. I can also help you decide what other health providers are an appropriate choice for your situation. You may choose to see a massage therapist, acupuncturist, chiropractor, or physical therapist. Some are working with neurologists. All are good options worth exploring, depending on your own personal comfort level, finances, and desire.
Designing a good personalized plan is a collaborative, creative process. I would love to get started and help you move beyond any pain you are experiencing.
Please contact me if you have any questions or if you would like to make an appointment.

Immediate Stress Relief |
Supine Yoga Twist is a pose many people use to alleviate stiffness and lack of mobility/flexibility in the spine. It can be done lying down (Supine means lying down) or with modifications in a seated or standing position. If you are lying down, simple modifications can be implemented. For instance, you might limit how far out you spread your arms, how much you twist from the neck down to the tail bone, or how high your knees are. Acute sensitivity to your special needs is essential! For a video teaching of this pose, click here. PLEASE DO NOT do this twist if any health provider (or your inner wisdom) has said "twisting is not good for my back!" You can get hurt. Email me how it goes!
