Greetings!
Fall is indeed a natural time for reflection; I have been thinking back on a summer workshop I took on HELPING. It was led by Dr. Edgar Schein (MIT School of Management) who offered a clear definition on helping, "Helping is enabling someone else to do something or accomplish something that she or he WANTED to do but could not do alone."
How much does the helpee want your help? Are you really aware of what the helpee cannot do alone? (That can be difficult!) Do you seek help that you do not truly want/are ready for? And, perhaps most common, do you avoid asking for help even though you can't go it alone?
Helping is such a vital thread in the fabric of life, despite our rugged American "independence."
What do you think?
This fall, I hope your reflections are fruitful and that you give and receive the kind of help most meaningful to you.
Please review my fall workshops on our relationship to food and specific self-care for men. Thank you.
All the best in self-care!
