Centennial: About a 100 Years

March

  • March 1-4, 2007, the Theatre Department presented Centennial: about a 100 Years.  An original performance written and directed by Wesley Savick, with choreography by Natalie Wombwell.
  • On March 5, 2007, the Government Department sponsored a Centennial Conference, organized by Associate Dean Sebastian Royo and Professor Roberto Dominguez, The Transatlantic Relationship at the Dawn of the New Millennium.  The conference featured a number of local and international scholars, including Carlos Westendorp, Ambassador of Spain to the United States, James Carroll, Distinguished Scholar in Residence, Luise Druke, Lebibiz University Hannover/Visiting Scholar MIT, Peter Walkins, Harvard University, Henry Nau, American University, Emil Kirchner, Essex University, Richard Torrisi, Suffolk University, Jay Rosellini, Suffolk University, Peter Hall, Harvard University, Andrew Martin, Harvard University, Jonahthan Haughton, Suffolk University, Sofia A.   • March 5-7, 2007 Les Amazones Women Master Drummers of Les AmazonesGuinea, held a series of performances, demonstrations, and workshops.  This event was sponsored by the Black Studies Program/the Collection of African American Literature.  All events were coordinated by Prof. Robert Bellinger of the History Department.
  • March 8, 2007, Martha Collins, award-winning poet, read from her new book, Blue Front at 1-2:30pm in the Poetry Center, Mildred Sawyer Library.
  • March 20, 2007, 12-3pm, a Majors Fair will be held in the Sawyer Lounge.  Please inform your students. Faculty from every undergraduate department will be available.  Lunch will be served.
  • March 20, 2007, "The Science of Forensics," by Dr. Richard Saferstein at 10am in the Poetry Center.  Dr. Saferstein is the author of the widely used textbook, Criminalistics: Introduction to Forensic Science.  Sponsored by the Forensic Science Program in Chemistry and Biochemistry.  Please contact Dr. Edward G.   • April 13-14, 2007, Suffolk University CounselingCenter Workshop.  This working conference and workshop focuses on college student depression and suicide prevention, including panel presentations of innovative approaches to this issue, discussion groups and panel roundtables.  All events to take place at Sargent Hall.

Publications
  • Krisanne Bursik, Ph.D., Psychology, and doctoral program graduate Richelle Srackert, Ph.D. have published their co-authored manuscript "Ego Development and the Therapeutic Goal-Setting Capacities of Mentally Ill Adults" in the most recent volume of the American Journal of Psychotherapy (2006, Volume 60, Number 4).
  • Darlene Chisholm, Ph.D., Economics and George Norman have recently had published "When to Exit a Product: Evidence from the U.S. Motion-Picture Exhibition Market," in the The American Economic Review, Vol. 96, Number 2, May 2006.
 Students
  • David Jacobson, who is currently working towards his MSPS in the Government Department, had his paper, "Massachusetts Republican Candidate Recruitment: Party Strength or Party Stigma?," accepted by the New England Political Science Association.

  • Kathleen Crissinger will receive her MSPS in International Relations in May 2007.  This fall she will attend the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University, where she will focus on Non-Profit Management and Public Policy.  Previously Kathleen has worked for the American Anti-Slavery Group in Boston and the Institute for Multi-Track Development in Washington, DC, where she concentrated on Sub-Saharan Africa.
 Alumni
 
  • Government Department alumnus, Nathan Shrader (MSPS 2006), presented his paper, "Metamorphosis: President George W. Bush's Rhetorical Foreign Policy Transition from Realism to Liberalism 1999-2004," at the Northeastern Political Science Association, held at the Omni Parker House last November.  This paper was also published in the Pennsylvania Political Science Association's journal, Commonwealth.
Maxine Hong KingstonDistinguished Visiting Scholars
 
  • March 19 - 23, 2007, award winning author, Maxine Hong Kingston will be returning to the College as part of the Distinguished Visiting Scholars series.  During her stay, Kingston will be making classroom visits, reading from her numerous works, including her most recent book, Veterans of Peace, Veterans of War, and participating in this year's Academic Conference.  For a complete listing of events, please contact Nicole Vadnais at nvadnais@suffolk.edu.
  • April 9-13, 2007, James Bamford, a CollegeJames Bamford alumnus who has written such books as Body of Secrets: Anatomy of the Ultrasecret NSA, From the Cold War to the Dawn of the New Century, The Puzzle Palace: A Report on the NSA, America's Most Secret Intelligence Agency,and A Pretext for War: 9/11, Iraq and the Abuse of America's Intelligence Agencies.  Bamford will be making class visits, lectures, and participating in the Lowell Lecture Series on April 12, 1-2:30pm.  For a complete listing of events, please contact Nicole Vadnais at nvadnais@suffolk.edu.
