On Campus: - Glenn Loury, economist and social theorist, gave this year?s first lecture in the Pearl Lecture Series. His talk, ?Are Black Americans a People?? was given on Monday, October 2, 2006 at 4 p.m. in the Poetry Center. - Vivian Pinn, M.D., Director for Research on Women?s Health, National Institutes of Health gave a lecture, ?Research on Women?s Health and Biomedical Careers for Women in the 21st Century? on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at 1 p.m. in Archer 365. - Prof. Helen Vendler, Harvard University gave a lecture, ?Last Things: The Later Work of Several Major Poets,? on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at 1 p.m. in Donahue 311. A reception followed at the Poetry Center (Sawyer Library, 73 Tremont Street). - ?Art Nouveau Furniture ? a contrast and comparison of furniture designed in France and Belgium at the turn of the 19th century? by Sarah Mattern. Dept), and Prof. Jay Rosellini (Humanities & Modern Languages Dept.) will be held in conjunction with an evening concert on Friday, October 27th, with Dunya and the Boston Camerata on the theme of the influence of Turkish janissary bands on Mozart. -Professor Richard Chambers (Theatre) designed the scenery for productions of The Beard of Avon, starring Juliet Mills, and Lydiia, starring Linda Dano, at The Cape Playhouse this past summer. He also designed the New York Fringe Festival production of Zayd Dorn's Permanent Whole Life, directed by Professor Wesley Savick (Theatre), lighted by Steven McIntosh (Theatre) and stage managed by Heather Mumford (Theatre, class of 2005). -Sebastian Royo (CAS Dean's Office/Govt. Dept) presented "Spain and Portugal in the European Union: Lessons" at the Short Course, Putting Spain and Portugal into the Political Science Syllabus, which Professor Royo also helped organize, at the 102nd Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association (APSA) in Philadelphia on August 30, 2006. - Michael Basseches (Psychology) gave the following invited presentations during the past year:
- On September 25, 26, and 27th Dr. Patricia Hogan, Dr. Igor Kreydin, Nataliia Perova, and students, John Hamm and Nicholas Hennigar from the Physics Department attended the Third Annual IEEE Communications Society Conference on Sensor, Mesh and Ad Hoc Communications and Networks (SECON 2006). The group presented a poster titled "Work on Multi-Channel Gas Analyzer with Wireless Data Transmission as an Educational Tool for Learning Science Concepts" and gave a demonstration titled, "University/Industry Collaboration for Development of a Wireless Network of Multi-channel, Multi-sensor Analyzers for Environmental and Industrial Monitoring."

- Congratulations to Dean Kenneth S. Greenberg whose film, Nat Turner: A Troublesome Property will be debuting at the Louvre in November and on the Italian television network, RAI, for the next three years! -Congratulations to Peter Jeffreys of the English Department! Prof. Jeffreys has been appointed as a Research Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Athens, Greece, the exclusive repository of the C.P. Cavafy Archive. His position entails compiling and maintaining the 21st Century Cavafy web-bibliography which has just been inaugurated as part of the center's official Cavafy website, http://www.cavafy.c om. The project and bibliography were written up in a feature article in the Athens daily, To Vima of 16 July, 2006.
