The Mesopotamia High Country Walk....
|
The Mesopotamia High Country Walk is an awe-inspiring four day fully guided walking tour, which includes the Mesopotamia High Country Station and the spectacular Peel Forest Scenic Reserve.
The station gained its early fame from the first owner - Samuel Butler - the renowned English writer and author of the brilliant satire Erewhon..... which was based on the wonderful landscapes found in the area. Your knowledgeable and friendly guide will entertain you with the history of Butler and the resilient families who broke in and farmed this wonderful land.
You will experience soaring landscapes, snow capped mountain ranges and wide open tussock covered tundras. High country stations have a unique part in the history of New Zealand and the early pioneering characters have been immortalised in print in numerous books covering this era.

Cherries May Help You Sleep....
| |

Hankering for a good night's sleep? Forget warm milk or counting sheep, Central Otago cherries could be just the bedtime remedy, according to preliminary research results just released.
Cherries grown in sun-rich Central Otago are a natural source of melatonin at levels 30 times higher than their northern hemisphere counterparts, the research says.
Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally present in the human body and aids sleep.
The findings come from research commissioned by Fruision Ltd, a joint venture between Hamilton-based Quantec Ltd, a company specialising in developing health remedies from natural products, and Alexandra-based fruitgrower Summerfruit.
Previous studies published in the United States have shown northern hemisphere cherries to have levels of melatonin at two to 15 nanograms per gram.
The latest study, undertaken by an independent laboratory in Australia, has shown Central Otago cherries have 500 nanograms per gram.
When the cherries had been dried, the melatonin levels increased to 3100 nanograms per gram.

Mushrooms....
|
Autumn is one of the best times to be outdoors, the stunning colours in the trees and hidden surprises in the number of startling fungi that pop up underneath them can be well worth taking your camera along for.
If you know what you are looking for some of those fungi can produce a delight for the dinner table as well. New Zealand has some delicious mushrooms growing wild and we are slowly discovering the taste for porcini, truffles and other exotics, but there are some really toxic ones too, if in doubt enjoy them through the lens of your camera only.
In the spirit of autumn, here is a quick and easy mushroom risotto recipe to try:
- 1 chopped onion, 2 cloves chopped garlic, 1 cup arborio rice,1/2 cup white wine, 2 cups chicken stock, 400g field mushrooms, sliced, 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
- Heat oil in a frying pan, gently cook onion and garlic until soft. Add the rice, stir for a minute, then add a splash of white wine. Once absorbed, add a ladle full of hot chicken stock, adding more as the liquid absorbs. After about 10 minutes, add sliced field mushrooms. Keep stirring and adding liquid until the rice is al dente and the mushrooms are cooked. Sprinkle with fresh parmesan and enjoy.
