MUSTAFAH ABDULAZIZ, RANIA MATAR, SUE FLOOD and RACHEL PAPO

photos by Nueva Luz and Lucie artists

MUSTAFAH ABDULAZIZ - Winner of the En Foco and Canson Infinity's People/Places/Things photo competition, and artist in the Spring 2010 issue of Nueva Luz photographic journal. He will show new work, and also discuss the series "Patagonia Cowboy," shot while backpacking in Patagonia for three months. Patagonia, an isolated land at the bottom of South America, lives a changing culture: the Patagonian cowboy, or gaucho, roams with their sheep and cattle in an existence that has changed little since the 1900's. Here, at the end of the world, traditions are being passed on to the new generation.

SUE FLOOD - Finalist for the International Photography Awards (IPA, a sister effort of the Lucie Foundation) "International Photographer of the Year." Sue, a photographer and wildlife filmmaker, focuses on a specialty of polar and marine environments, as well as other documentary subjects. She was an associate producer for the BBC series "The Blue Planet" and "Planet Earth", which took her to the Arctic, the Antarctic and the South Pacific where she worked as a stills photographer and field assistant, supplying images for publicity for the series.

RANIA MATAR - Published in Nueva Luz volume 13#3 this past spring, she is also celebrating the publication of her monograph, "Ordinary Lives." The book includes images from three interrelated bodies of work: The Aftermath of War, a photographic essay of life in Lebanon after the numerous wars the country has gone through; The Veil: Modesty, Fashion, Devotion or Statement, studying the relatively recent spread of the veil and its meanings among Muslim women in Lebanon; and The Forgotten People, portraying life in the decaying Palestinian refugee camps of Lebanon. Rania's book will be available for purchase and can be signed by the artist.

RACHEL PAPO - Finalist for the International Photography Awards (IPA) "Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year." Her series, "Serial No. 3817131" reflects her own serial number during her service in the Israeli Air Force, and considers those photographs a bridge between the past and present, revealing the soldier and the teenage girl in constant negotiation caught between two extremes: a soldier who lives on an army base with hundreds just like her, and an individual who wishes to be noticed. Papo's work explores the complex range of emotions inherent in all adolescents, and the vulnerable side of each soldier.
