Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum The library is partnering with Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum to create science-rich experiences and science celebrations in Michigan, and we need YOU to help make it happen! The Museum is looking for tween and teen volunteers from Chelsea to brainstorm and test concepts using water and common household materials to create a working model of the Great Lakes Watershed. You WILL get WET, as you use science, creativity and your imagination to figure out how you might construct a museum exhibit and hands-on activities. The two workshops will be led by Museum staff, exhibit designers and regional educational experts. Limited to 15 participants for each workshop.

What is a Library "Database"?

Question Mark Graphic

When looking for information online, librarians often suggest library databases. What is a "database" and how does it differ from a search in Google? The Enoch Pratt Free Library gives a great explanation:

How is a library database different from a website?

Library databases      Web sites

Library databases get their information from professionals or experts in the field.

Web sites can be written by anyone regardless of expertise.

Library databases contain published works where facts are checked.

Web site content is not necessarily checked by an expert.

Library databases are easy to cite in a bibliography and may create the citation for you.

Web sites often don't provide the information necessary to create a complete citation.

Library databases can help you narrow your topic or suggest related subjects.Web sites often aren't organized to support student research needs.

Library databases are updated frequently and include the date of publication

Web sites may not indicate when a page is updated.

Any source, whether a library database or website, can have good information. It is necessary to think critically about all information that you read or view.

How to access library databases?

  • You can find library databases here.
  • The databases are available free with your Chelsea District Library card. Most databases can be viewed from your home, school, or any computer which has internet access.
  • To logon to a database outside the library click on the database title and, when prompted, enter your library card number (this is located under the bar code on the back of your library card). Click the 'Login' button to be forwarded to your selected database.
  • Need more help? Our staff is ready to help you with your research needs. You can ask a librarian in person at any Information Desk, on the phone and online with our live support available from our home page.
