Medical Marijuana:
the good, the bad, the ugly?

Medical Marijuana Panel On November 4, 2008, Michigan voters approved the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, providing protections for the use of medical marijuana in the state. As the law has taken effect, issues have arisen for both the law enforcement and the medical communities. There are still questions about the safety of using marijuana, especially for teens and young adults. The Chelsea District Library has invited a panel of local and national experts to speak about the issues of medical marijuana, and take audience questions.

Our Panelists:
Phyllis M. Boniface, M.D. is a specialist in Adult Neuropsychiatry and Psychopharmacology. She works with patients who have been using medical marijuana at Psychiatry Experts of Ann Arbor, P.C.

Ed Toth is the Police Chief for the city of Chelsea.

Donald R Vereen, Jr. M.D., M.P.H. is the Director of Community Academic Engagement at the Prevention Research Center of the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He is the former Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy during the Clinton Administration. Prior to that, he served as Special Assistant to the Director for Medical Affairs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Mark A. Weiner, M.D. is a specialist in Internal Medicine, and an expert in Addiction Medicine, and Pain Medicine. He has experience working with patients who are using medical marijuana for pain and nausea control. His office, Pain Recovery Solutions, is in Ann Arbor, MI.

Meet Sara, Head of Adult Services

Sara, Head of Adult ServicesSara joined the Chelsea District Library in 2009 as the Head of Adult Services. She oversees the adult collection, programs, adult reference staff and projects like StoriesofChelsea.org, the online home for the library's oral history project and local history collection. Since 2005, Sara has been a volunteer for the Internet Public Library, a free online service that provides resources and reference to a global user base.

Professionally, Sara is most interested in connecting people with information in a meaningful way - which can mean putting the right book in a person's hands, helping them navigate a website, hosting interactive programs or preserving and telling the stories of our community.

She loveThe Sister Brother by Patrick deWitts to read, but knows there are millions of books out there she will never get to, so likes to hear about what everyone else is reading and live vicariously through them. Sara likes to receive book recommendations as much as she likes to give them!

Sara just read The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt. Read her review.
