Chelsea District Library Makes Magic Come to Life on Stage!

The Magic Tinder BoxThe Chelsea District Library made magic come to life as Chelsea youth presented a dramatic production of The Magic Tinder Box, performed on Saturday, July 16, 2011. With a tremendous youth cast aged 7 to 14, the play was performed to wild applause. Offered through the Chelsea District Library youth department, the play, adapted from a story by Hans Christian Andersen, presented the tale of a lonely soldier who defeats evil witches and gains a magic tinder box and three magic dogs to do his bidding. The play pitted the good townspeople against the obnoxious royals that strip the town of its wealth. Aided by an egalitarian princess, the soldier helped the townspeople as he sought love and success. Filled with magic and mayhem, the play offered opportunities for all kinds of acting styles.

Drame WeekThe script was written precisely for the size and ages, as every child who auditioned received a part.   Drama week is part of the Summer Reading Program at the library, and children memorized their lines for almost three weeks before the six day rehearsal. Written and directed by Lisa McClure, Youth and Teen Librarian, the play received great support from other librarians who took desk shifts to free Lisa to concentrate on the play. Many parents generously provided help with costumes, makeup, props, set construction, and set strike, and spent every evening listening to lines read by their young actors. The play was funded primarily with the gracious help of the Friends of the Chelsea District Library.
