Chelsea District Library brings Magic to the Stage!
Do you like magic? Come see the magic of the theater as Chelsea youth bring a play to life in the dramatic production of The Magic Tinder Box! Adapted from a story by Hans Christian Andersen, the play presents the tale of a lonely soldier who defeats evil witches and gains a magic tinder box and three magic dogs to do his bidding. The play pits the good townspeople against the obnoxious royals that strip the town of its wealth. Aided by an egalitarian princess, the soldier helps the townspeople as he seeks love and success. Filled with magic and mayhem, the play offers opportunities for all kinds of acting styles. The cast ranges from 7 to 14 years old, and the script was written precisely for the size and ages, as every child who auditioned received a part. Drama week is part of the Summer Reading Program at the library, and children memorize for almost three weeks and rehearse and perform in only one week. The Magic Tinder Box is an entertaining play, and studies show that viewing theater has great benefits for kids. Children who view dramatic productions learn to think critically about what they saw and articulate their ideas and feelings. And for those in the cast, it is a terrific medium for keeping children active and healthy. It can boost self esteem, improve public speaking, and provide a place to practice creativity. Saturday, July 16 | 1-2pm Washington Street Education Center auditorium 500 Washington Street FREE | No registration required, just drop in! |
