3 Local Sponsors Encourage Summer Reading

Summer Reading kicks off in June and wouldn't be possible without help from the community. We would like to thank the Friends of the Chelsea District Library

who generously support both youth and adult summer reading programs, Chelsea Masons Olive Lodge #156,

who donated $700.00 for the youth summer reading program and Aberdeen Bike and Outdoors  who donate a child's bike each year as a grand prize. Thank you!

Summer Reading sponsorsWhat is summer reading?

Summer Reading is a great way to connect with others who like to read, while reading what you want at your own pace. Fun activities take place all summer long, and everyone in Chelsea, from babies to children to teens and adults, can sign up. Best of all, it's free! This year's theme for kids and teens: Myths, Magic and Legends.

Adults enjoy Summer Reading, too! This year's theme:

Made in Michigan. Attend book discussions, participate in a Michigan-themed summer reading game and connect with others at Michigan-themed workshops and events throughout the summer. Adult Summer Reading game and events coming soon!

Why read over the summer?

Studies show that children and teens who read during the summer are better prepared for school in the fall. Also, reading for fun results in significant improvement in vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Plus, summer activities and trips always call for good books!

How can I motivate my child to read?

Joining Summer Reading is a great first step. Encourage your child to explore all areas of the library to discover new topics or books of interest. Adults mix challenging books with light reading, and children and teens should also be allowed to choose some light, fun books, especially when they have a break from school. Most importantly, children and teens who see adults around them reading are more likely to read themselves. So you can foster a love of reading by signing up the whole family for Summer Reading!

Meet Allison

Allison
Allison is reading Tillie Lays an Egg by Terri Golson

Allison works as a Library Assistant in the Circulation Department. She repackages media into library cases, repairs and replaces broken cases and also works on special projects for librarians, like putting vampire stickers on teen books. Allison manages the lost and found, keeping it neat and setting up the table at the beginning of each month. She also adds new applicants' emails to the e-newsletter list. Allison also teaches craft classes at the library, most recently Sun Jars for Spring where participants create a solar-powered light that soaks up the sun to cast a gentle light all night long. Before coming to Chelsea, she worked at the Manchester Library for two years.

Allison likes to read classic literature, craft books and children's picture books. She raises chickens and goats, sells eggs, keeps bees and has a large vegetable garden. Her goal is to be able to produce most of her own food. Allison sews on a 1901 treadle sewing machine, and takes her dog, Greta, jogging.
