Student Tiles to be Installed on Library Pergola
 | | Beach school 6th graders make tiles for library pergola |
Last summer a pergola was built in the Library's Reading Garden to provide a shady space for outdoor activity. In September of 2010 Beach School 6th grade students through their Science classes guided by naturalist Meg Gower and Carol Strahler were taken on a nature walk to learn and identify the natural plant life of Michigan. Each student collected and identified specimens of nature. The following school day the students made a terra cotta clay tile and pressed their specimens into the clay for designs. The student's names were not added to the individual tiles so that they were able to feel this was a community project and not an individual project. Installation of the tiles will begin this month with a celebration on June 4, 2011. Mark your calendars and look for details later this month! Bill Coelius, "The Princess Bride" and Book Sales
 | | Bill Coelius, Friends book sale volunteer |
If you aren't a member of the Friends of Chelsea District Library, you may have missed this great article by Angela Berent on volunteer, Bill Coelius..... Listening to Bill Coelius talk about his favorite book of all time, The Princess Bride, is quite a treat. The details. The wonder. The conflict of good and evil. It's no surprise that this storyteller and avid reader donates his time to the Friends book sale. First introduced to the book sale by his wife, Pat, Bill is a member of the set-up team as well as a helper during the sales. Bill credits Sharon Pignanelli with creating an organized environment, which makes him willing to help on Friday nights and Saturday sale days. "Sharon's feel for organization has enabled it to be more than a typical book sale," he says. Further, he appreciates her "determination to make it a success." There is a tremendous amount of work in preparing a sale. "Books aren't light," he chuckles. Find out what happened when Bill started reading The Princess Bride to his class.... |
